Serving a population of around 500,000 people living in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, we are focused on the health and care needs of our local population whilst also working with our partners to develop regional services.
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Surgical Care Practitioners (SCP's) to join our Cardiothoracic Services team at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. The SCP's will play a pivotal role in supporting the surgical team by providing expert care throughout the patient pathway, including pre-operative assessment, intra-operative assistance, and post-operative management.
This advanced clinical role combines surgical expertise with patient-centered care, ensuring high standards of safety, quality, and efficiency. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with consultants, nurses, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver exceptional outcomes for patients undergoing cardiothoracic procedures.
A training position will be considered for the right candidate who demonstrates commitment, enthusiasm, and the potential to develop into the SCP role. The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
- Provide expert first and second assistance in the operating theatre, including conduit harvesting and other extended surgical skills.
- Support preoperative assessment and postoperative care of cardiothoracic patients.
- Contribute to service development, teaching, training, and audit within the department.
- Work closely with consultants, trainees, advanced nurse practitioners, and the wider MDT to ensure excellent standards of care.
- Assist in complex cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures, ensuring safe and efficient operative practice.
- Undertake vein conduit harvesting for coronary artery bypass grafting.
- Participate in ward rounds, clinics, and discharge planning.
- Support patient education and informed consent processes.
- Engage in clinical governance activities, including audit and quality improvement projects.
- Contribute to the training and development of junior staff and students.
- Maintain professional competence and keep up to date with developments in cardiothoracic surgery.
