This post is ideal for doctors aiming to work towards a Core Surgical Training Programme application. Day to day care of patients on the Trauma and Orthopaedic wards at Princess Royal Hospital working as part of the team in the Hip Fracture Unit and Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre elective orthopaedic unit. T&O theatre and clinic experience.

The full-time post will be contracted as 48 hours per week and attracts a 1B (40%) banding. Post available from 1st November 2025 to 4th August 2026. The post holds a 3 month notice period.

Main duties of the job:

Ideally you have decided on Trauma and Orthopaedics as your preferred career or be in an allied specialty with an interest in surgery. Alternatively, you may have done F2 and are looking for a new experience before deciding what you would like to do. You will have an active interest in improving the quality of care within the Trust. You will be capable of managing projects both independently and under supervision and be skilled at team working. Regular supervision meetings with a training Consultant will help you shape your future career.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:

This is a SHO level clinical role in Trauma and Orthopaedics for 12 months. Successful candidates will be expected to work at Princess Royal Hospital, PRH (Haywards Heath) although in some circumstances there may be a need to work at Royal Sussex County Hospital, RSCH (Brighton).

These full-time jobs are 48 hours per week. These jobs are designed to support doctors working towards an application to a Core Training programme in their chosen specialty area. We can support completion of competencies needed for CREST from sign off and there are ample opportunities for doctors to bolster their CVs with QI, audit, research, teaching, and managerial projects.

Person specification:
  • Basic Medical Degree
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
Clinical Skills and Experience:
  • Competencies equivalent to completion of FY1, as a minimum
  • Experience of work as a doctor in the NHS (i.e. formal contractual work, not clinical attachment).
Teaching Skills:
  • Evidence of an interest and commitment to teaching
  • Recognised teaching qualification
Academic and Research:
  • Evidence of participation in audit
  • Research experience
  • Publications
