Are you keen to work in an exciting and well-rated Children’s Emergency Bay where you can make a real difference to children and young people? Are you passionate about improving the quality of care received by your patients and being involved in developing a flourishing service?

You will work alongside a multi-disciplinary team of middle grade doctors, ACPs, ENPs and consultants in the ED at the Princess of Wales Hospital providing front line care to an undifferentiated case mix. The department provides a consultant led service and there is direct consultant shop floor cover approximately 13 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The ED at the Princess of Wales Hospital sees approximately 56,000 new patients per year, with approximately 12,000 children and young people. There is substantial exposure to the breadth of EM cases ranging from seriously ill or injured children and young people to minor injuries with ample opportunities to develop EM procedural skills. Our ED has a dedicated, dynamic and friendly multi-disciplinary team. This provides an excellent and supportive working environment.

You will have opportunities to be involved in undergraduate teaching, audit and quality improvement.

To assess and contribute to the immediate management of new patients, comprising the entire spectrum of paediatric emergency presentations.

To act when necessary, as resuscitation team leader for seriously ill or injured children while they are in the Emergency Department.

To contribute to the supervision and management of the Children’s Emergency Bay as required while on duty, managing the disposition of clinical staff to ensure efficient patient flow.

To support the supervision and training of junior medical staff.

You will be required to adhere to the principles of good medical practice as laid down by the General Medical Council. You will be required to maintain a licence to practice through revalidation, to undergo satisfactory annual appraisal using the all Wales online Medical Appraisal Scheme (“MARS”) and to formulate a Personal Development Plan, in conjunction with the Clinical lead, to identify training and development needs. You will be expected to participate in sufficient personal and professional development to fulfil Royal College and GMC requirements. You will also be required to undergo a job plan review at least annually and to agree and then meet service outcomes.

You will adhere to all policies which cover radiation exposures as currently outlined in IRMER regulations. The Health Board is committed to meet its obligations to minimize infection. You will be required to comply with current procedures for the control of infection, including dress-code, to challenge non-compliance by colleagues, and to attend training in infection control provided by the Health Board.

Person specification

  • Registration: Full GMC/GDC Registration
  • Qualifications: MBBS or recognised equivalent
  • Knowledge: At least 4 years full-time postgraduate training (or part-time equivalent), with experience in a relevant specialty or equivalent experience and competencies in Paediatric Emergency Medicine
  • Experience: Evidence of working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. Commitment to team approach and multi-disciplinary working. Experience of management and governance issues applicable to emergency care.
  • Teaching: Teaching and training of post/undergraduate medical staff
  • Audit and Quality Improvement: Evidence of participation in, progressing and completing audit / QI. Experience in research applicable to Paediatric Emergency Medicine.
  • Skills: Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance. Ability to take independent clinical decisions when necessary and to seek advice from senior doctors as appropriate. Competence at managing the broad spectrum of paediatric emergency presentations. Instructor status on ATLS or APLS or equivalent.
  • Experience: Up to date with current practices in Paediatric Emergency Medicine. Previous experience of working in the NHS/experience of NHS UK working practices and systems. Current certification in at least one of ATLS/APLS/EPALS or equivalent.
