This is an exciting opportunity to join the Bolton community learning disability team in our 8b principal psychologist or 8a - 8b progression role. The successful applicant will join our integrated learning disability team; a team of health and social care professionals who work jointly to provide assessment, support and health or social care interventions to adults with learning disabilities.

The post holder will offer psychological assessments, formulations and treatment plans for adults with learning disabilities who may have highly complex psychological needs. Following a recent review of our team structure, we have successfully appointed a new consultant psychologist, and we are now looking to recruit to the full psychology team.

Alongside the consultant psychologist, the post holder will develop a high-quality psychological service and contribute to the strategic development of psychology services within the community learning disability team. You will help to implement and shape the psychology offer within the team and will have access to regular supervision and continuing professional development.

Main duties of the job:

You will work with adults who have a diagnosed learning disability who may present with highly complex needs. These needs may include autism, mental health conditions and/or distress behaviours. You will be able to interpret complex data from a variety of sources, including psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, observations and clinical interviews with individuals, their carers and family members.

As a member of the learning disability leadership team, you will have the management and leadership skills required to support the team to deliver a high-quality and efficient service, contributing to the delivery of key performance indicators and with a focus on continued service development. You will be able to offer clinical supervision to qualified junior members of the psychology team, trainee psychologists and psychologist assistants.

The team is hosted by Bolton council and based at Farnworth Town Hall. Health workers maintain NHS employment status and retain all the benefits of working within the Foundation Trust. We aim to provide high-quality support to our workforce, valuing regular, good quality supervision and an annual appraisal with a continued focus on professional development.

Person specification:
  • Car driver with access to a vehicle for work purposes/subject to the terms of the Disability Discrimination Act.
  • Doctoral Level Training in clinical psychology as accredited by the BPS
  • HCPC registered as a practitioner psychologist
  • Good honours degree in psychology with eligibility for graduate membership of BPS.
  • Chartered Status with the BPS and membership of the division of clinical psychology.
Experience:
  • Clinical experience of working with adults with a learning disability
  • Supervision and consultation work with other health and social care professionals
  • Experience of working with adults with a learning disability and highly complex needs.
Knowledge and skills:
  • Skills in the application of theory to clinical practice to clients with learning disabilities who have complex needs
  • Research and evaluation skills.
  • Consultation and teaching skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing
  • General skills in the use of IT applications
