Band 6 Senior Mental Health Practitioner - Eating Disorders in Birmingham

The Specialist Eating Disorders Service (SEDS) are seeking to recruit a Senior Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who is committed to working with young people and young adults with eating disorders. We are looking for qualified nurses who have post-registration experience of working with children, young people/adults with eating disorders and mental illness within a mental health setting. SEDS are part of Forward Thinking Birmingham (FTB) which is now the Children’s and Young People’s division of BSMHFT.

SEDS are an established and ambitious team who provide specialist assessment, intervention and evidence-based treatment for patients aged 0-25 with eating disorders in the community, alongside supporting their families/carers. The team also provides intensive treatment in the community to help keep patients in their own homes, reduce inpatient admissions and support early discharge.

We are committed to developing therapeutic skills alongside the traditional nursing role within the SEDS team, and offer a number of training and supervision opportunities both in-house and externally for ED specific training such as the MANTA, Family Based Treatment and CBT-E. Staff take part in the National ED whole team training and have excellent resources available for staff development.

Main duties of the job

• Experience of completing comprehensive psychosocial and risk assessments within a mental health framework.
• Therapeutic interventions for patients with eating disorders, physical health monitoring and CPA/Dialog+.
• Manage an allocated caseload of patients with eating disorders and mental health comorbidities.
• Contribute to duty screening, assessment, treatment and intensive outreach within the ED team.
• High level of communication skills, both written and verbal, be compassionate, respectful and value individual patient needs.
• Recognise and manage challenging situations in a calm and professional manner.
• Excellent working knowledge of child protection and adult safeguarding issues and processes for the age range 0-25.
• Prepared to work flexibly across a 6-day week, between 8am - 8pm weekdays and weekends where appropriate.
• A driving license and access to a car daily for work purposes is essential as the service is citywide.

Person specification

• Experience of working with eating disorder patients.
• Experience of post-registration work in a mental health setting.
• Experience of working in a mental health community setting.
• Knowledge of eating disorder conditions.
• Knowledge of safeguarding processes.
• Nursing qualification and registration.
• Qualification or training in relevant therapeutic intervention for eating disorders, such as CBT-E, MANTRA etc.
