Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population. Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.
We are looking for a Locum Consultant who has considerable Anaesthetics experience to join our team made up of 23 Consultants here at Basildon Hospital. You will get a chance to work across a wide variety of surgical specialties, in particular elective and emergency vascular cases. Working with colleagues you will help drive current service changes with reconfiguration of vascular services in Mid and South Essex, which has been endorsed by the Vascular Society, GIRFT and NHS England Specialist commissioning team. Please note this post is a Fixed Term post for 12 months commencing from your start date.
The Basildon Vascular surgical team cover all aspects of Vascular surgery including EVAR/TEVAR and Renal Vascular Access. The Regional Cardio-Thoracic Centre based on the Basildon Site, has a busy primary PCI service and TAVI programme for which we provide a 24/7 vascular cover for any unforeseen emergencies. Basildon Hospital has a successful hyper-acute stroke unit generating >40 carotid procedures per annum. At present, Basildon is part of the South Essex Emergency Vascular network providing emergency vascular provision (Monday- Chelmsford, Tuesday- Southend, Wednesday- Basildon, Thursday - Harlow) with Basildon Hospital on-call for vascular emergencies 1:4 weekends.

You will be expected to integrate within the team of existing consultant staff in order to provide a complete Anaesthetics Service. The Trust is committed to offering a much more patient focused service and Anaesthetics have made their services available seven days a week and the successful applicant will be expected to participate in these services. Anaesthesia services are provided for 2 day Surgery theatres at Orsett. Basildon has 7 main theatres, 3 day surgery theatres and 2 maternity theatres, and also a hybrid theatre in the Cardiothoracic Centre. The day unit also feeds patients into the main theatres. In addition anaesthetic services are provided for A&E, X-ray, Cardiology and patients requiring ECT.
Qualifications
- MBBS or Equivalent
- Evidence of completion of specialist training or equivalent
- GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of training (CCT) at time of interview
Experience
- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the specialty.
- Comprehensive knowledge in the specialty and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems.
