Job Purpose:

To inspire a committed, passionate and competent workforce to learn together to create healthier lives for people with learning disabilities and autistic adults. The Estia Centre Learning and Development Lead will be a learning disability specialist responsible for designing, developing and facilitating quality-driven, evidence-based learning programmes and curating and creating engaging learning materials in partnership with clinical subject matter experts and learning disability and autistic experts by experience.

About the Estia Centre

The Estia Centre is a leader in learning and development for teams who support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We are a City and Guilds Assured provider of a wide range of development programmes co-produced in partnership with our clinical subject matter experts across South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and learning disability and autism subject matter experts. Together we aim to develop the confidence, competence and skills of local, regional and national support for staff and teams through our provision of open courses, bespoke and tailor-made learning programmes.

In this role, you will be able to work Monday to Friday in the time frames from 9-5, giving you the very best of good work-life balance. We are happy to discuss any flexible working requirements at the interview.

When not working from home, our team is based in the CTC at the Maudsley Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Job Overview:

We are seeking a learning and development professional with extensive practical experience in supporting adults with a learning disability to join our team so that we can continue making a real difference to the health and lives of people with learning disabilities and autistic adults.

At the Estia Centre, we aim to inspire a committed, passionate and competent workforce by providing a wide range of quality-driven, specialist and expert-led learning, development and research opportunities. The Estia Training Officer will be responsible for designing, developing and facilitating quality-driven, evidence-based training programmes and curating and creating engaging learning materials. Applicants should therefore have experience of designing and delivering training workshops and facilitating adult learning.

As our learning programmes are often developed and delivered in partnership with clinical subject matter experts and experts with lived experience, the successful candidate will need to be a skilled communicator and networker and be able to develop trusting relationships. They will also need to be flexible, imaginative, creative and motivated to generate novel ideas and put them into practice.

Formal training sponsored by the Estia Centre is available to develop the successful candidate’s learning and development knowledge and expertise particularly about learning disability and autism.

To be shortlisted for this post, candidates must be able to evidence substantial experience in working with adults with a learning disability and in delivering training programmes to adult learners.

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) provides the widest range of NHS mental health services in the UK as well as substance misuse services for people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. We work closely with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), King’s College London and are part of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre. There are very few organisations in the world that have such wide-ranging capabilities working with mental illness. SLaM employs around 5000 staff and serves a local population of 1.1 million people. We have more than 230 services including inpatient wards, outpatient and community services. Currently, we provide inpatient care for approximately 5,300 people each year and treat more than 45,000 patients in the community in Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark; as well as substance misuse services for residents of Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Job Description

Estia learning programmes

  • Uses specialist knowledge to develop and deliver engaging tutor-led face-to-face and online learning programmes to a range of learner levels (support staff to clinicians) on the specialist complex needs of people with learning disabilities and autistic adults.
  • Ensures that learning programmes are underpinned by theoretical knowledge, are practice-focused, evidence-based and kept up to date with clinical advances and research.
  • Assists in the measurement and evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of learning, training delivery and materials.
  • Autonomously develops training materials and organises their own work schedule.
  • Plans and organises the delivery of training to multi-agencies/services.
  • Assists in the planning, co-ordination, development and delivery of learning programmes.
  • Under the supervision of the Head of Education and Training for Estia, leads on the development of published materials (e.g., training materials and resources, books, e-learning resources).
  • Coordinates experts by experience involvement in learning and training activities and leads on the development of co-produced education and training initiatives with NHS and social care colleagues.
  • Works in partnership with clinicians to support expert by experience facilitators participate in co-produced projects and initiatives.
  • Ensures patients and people who use services contribute to the Estia Centre strategy, policies, development and improvement where appropriate. This includes those from diverse communities and in line with the Estia and Trust’s Equality and Diversity policies.
  • Supports the Estia Centre to achieve its vision, mission and values.

Research and Development

  • Promote and support the inclusion of adults with learning disabilities and autistic people with additional mental health needs and/or complex needs in local research initiatives and projects.
  • Support the Estia staff and Head of Education and Training to participate in practice-based research and innovations in line with King’s Health Partnership (KHP) tripartite mission.
  • Support and participate in the Estia team in sharing and showcasing research outcomes to internal and external events and forums.
  • Willing to undertake further education and training to meet the demands of the role.

Consultancy and Project Management

  • Under the direction of the Estia team, support to engage with and co-produce agreed project activities.
  • Work alongside Estia staff to develop and agree work schedules which are required for the delivery of any project outcomes.
  • Support the analysis of training data/information to identify improvements and develop new initiatives.
  • Participate and contribute to Estia Board meetings.
  • Take on administration functions of Estia Centre as necessary.
  • Under Head of Education and Training guidance inspire those projects to maximise Estia Centre’s income generation opportunities.
  • Ensure the appropriate use of expert by experience in all aspects of income generation projects.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent.
  • Training/Teaching qualification.
  • Qualification in a learning disability related subject.

Experience

  • Substantial experience working in services for people with a learning disability.
  • Extensive experience of developing, delivering and evaluating face-to-face, blended and online training.
  • Highly proficient in using MS Office applications including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Working as a clinician in learning disabilities services e.g. Learning Disability Nurse, Psychologist etc.
  • Collaborative working with other organisations such as social services, private and voluntary sector.

Knowledge

  • Extensive knowledge of the lives, care and support needs of people with a learning disability and autistic adults including those with mental health and/or behaviours of concern.
  • Knowledge of information and communications technology, particularly marketing through new media.
  • Understanding of adult learning theory and how to apply it effectively.
  • Knowledge of marketing issues, terminology and practice.
