Registered Clinical Scientist

North West London Pathology (NWLP) is an NHS pathology partnership joint venture between Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust and The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. NWLP is modelled as a shared services organisation jointly owned by the three Trusts. The organisation is hosted by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and as the legal entity for NWLP our staff are employed by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. NWLP is based on a ‘hub and spoke’ structure; the majority of routine, specialist and non-urgent activity is centralised at our hub site at Charing Cross Hospital. Urgent tests required for immediate patient management and treatment are performed in 24/7 Essential Service Laboratories based on-site within the seven hospital sites in the group. This Band 7 vacancy offers an excellent opportunity for a qualified and motivated Clinical Scientist to join the specialist Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (H&I) team at Hammersmith Hospital, part of North West London Pathology (NWLP). As one of the largest pathology collaborations in the UK, NWLP delivers over 25 million tests annually across six hospital sites, providing high‑quality, efficient diagnostics in a forward‑thinking environment. The post supports renal and stem cell transplant programmes, alongside disease association testing. The successful candidate will rotate through different sections of the UKAS‑and EFI‑accredited H&I laboratory and participate in the on‑call rota for urgent solid organ transplant support. Hybrid working arrangements are available where service needs allow, alongside a supportive environment that encourages continuous professional development and innovation. Applicants must hold HCPC registration and the BSHI Diploma. Candidates nearing completion of STP training or close to HCPC registration in H&I will also be considered.

Main duties of the job

As a Registered Clinical Scientist, you will deliver a range of complex scientific and technical activities to support the provision of a high‑quality Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics service. Working closely with Consultant Clinical Scientists, Pathologists, and the Divisional Manager, you will contribute to compliance with nationally accepted standards and regulatory requirements. You will develop expertise in interpreting laboratory results and providing clinical advice, escalating complex cases when required. The role includes participation in quality improvement, audit, service development, and relevant research projects. The post holder will contribute to local and national education and training activities and will be supported to work towards Part 1 of the FRCPath (Associate level). You will also participate in the out‑of‑hours on‑call rota, providing urgent diagnostic and interpretive support for solid organ transplantation, including timely communication of results to clinical teams.

NWLP Induction

The NWLP induction will run on the first Monday of each month (provided it does not fall on a bank holiday) and includes laboratory training (for relevant laboratory roles). All new staff must attend the NWLP induction during their first week with NWLP.

• 1st or 2nd Class Hons Science degree or equivalent
• Completed suitable scientific training
• MSc or equivalent in relevant discipline
• HCPC Registration
• PhD

• Skills

• Good practical skills and technical competence
• Self motivated; ability to organize own study and laboratory work
• Excellent interpersonal abilities
• Ability to work with high level of autonomy
• Use of laboratory computing systems

• Experience

• Postgraduate laboratory experience in Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics
