The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country. It provides a wide range of general and specialist clinical services and is a base for medical education, training and research.

The Trust comprises of four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton Hospital in Banbury.

A Ophthalmology fellowship is available from February 2027 for 12 months at John Radcliffe Hospital. This fellowship is for candidates interested in medical retina.

The appointment is full time however, applications are welcome from those who wish to job share.

This post is suitable for doctors who have completed their training or have completed a significant part of their training but seek experience in medical retina prior to obtaining a consultant appointment. It is not a post that is approved for training by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Any person who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis, in consultation with consultant supervisors. Suitably qualified job-share candidates will be considered.

Main duties of the job

We welcome candidates who are interested in enhancing their training to include medical retina.

This post is suitable for ophthalmologists who have completed their training (to CCT level) or have completed a significant part of their training including postgraduate examinations but seek experience in the above ophthalmology subspecialties prior to obtaining a consultant appointment. It is not an approved training post.

The post holder will have the opportunity to work within a dynamic team of medical retina specialists with subspecialist interests ranging from uveitis, paediatric uveitis, vascular medical retina, AMD, ocular genetics, specialist retina, ocular oncology and von hippel lindau. We are also a national centre for neuromyelitis optica and neurofibromatosis type 2.

We participate in a multidisciplinary service for our regional Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis service. Medical Ophthalmology is a cross-disciplinary service and we encourage participation of our trainees in rheumatology, sarcoidosis, vasculitis and multiple sclerosis clinics to deepen knowledge of the conditions giving rise to uveitis.

Working for our organisation

he Oxford Eye Hospital and its consultant body has an active research portfolio. Participation in research through the writing up of clinical studies and case reports is encouraged. The Medical Retina Consultants are also part of the cataract surgical team. Fellows have the opportunity to access cataract surgery but only during weekend lists, there is no weekday theatre allocation within this Fellowship. There is also the opportunity to be involved in trainee, and medical student teaching on a formal and informal basis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder’s duties will be primarily at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford but their presence may from time to time be required in other parts of the Trust, such as in Wantage or Banbury. In addition to gaining experience in managing common medical retina conditions such as AMD and retinal vascular disorders, the fellowship includes sub-specialty training in inherited retinal diseases, uveitis, and other rare retinal diseases

Indicative weekly timetable

• Several medical retina clinics including AMD, Vascular Medical Retina, Specialist Retina, Genetics and VHL amongst other MR clinics
• 1 Eye Casualty session
• 1 Admin session
• 1 Teaching/Research session

Person specification

Qualifications/Training

• GMC - Registered with a Licence to Practice
• General training in ophthalmology to specialist level or equivalent with medical retina experience

Experience

• Demonstrate ability to conduct clinical and operative care in ophthalmology
• Demonstrate special expertise in the areas of sub-specialty of medical retina
• Higher specialist training in ophthalmology or equivalent
• Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees
• Experience of routine clinical audit

Skills and Knowledge

• Ability to organise and manage clinical workload
• To undertake effectively the role of clinical fellow in a large teaching hospital.
• Ability to communicate effectively through good verbal and written skills
• Evidence of ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels skills should be highly developed.
