Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join a small professional team, based in the Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering department at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne. The team provides a highly regarded quality assurance programme for ultrasound equipment in over 50 hospitals and health centres across the North East and North Cumbria.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated healthcare science assistant practitioner to play a major role in the delivery of our quality assurance programme for ultrasound equipment used in radiology departments, antenatal clinics, echocardiography units and other clinical departments across the region.

Main duties of the job

If you’re successful in your application, you’ll perform quality assurance measurements on ultrasound equipment in hospitals and health centres throughout the region, liaise with sonographers and other clinical employees in those hospitals and health centres and, together with more senior colleagues, prepare draft reports for the users of the equipment.

For appointment at Band 4, you’ll need a minimum of an NVQ Level 3 qualification or equivalent in a science, engineering or radiography-related subject, together with additional training to diploma level or equivalent.

In addition, the job involves frequent travel to other hospital sites, so you'll need a current full UK driving licence and a willingness to drive.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Performs a number of healthcare science technical activities, e.g. performs tests on ultrasound equipment in a range of hospital and other healthcare settings across the region.
  • Maintains technical records in relation to activities carried out
  • May be required to supervise, organise and allocate work and/or train less experienced staff in own area
  • Is involved in service development projects.

Person specification

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of IT software packages at a level equivalent to GCSE Grade C or above
  • Some knowledge of clinical hazards and infection control
  • Some knowledge of clinical hazards and infection control
  • Some knowledge of medical ultrasound technology, other ultrasound technology, or other medical imaging technology
  • Some knowledge of quality assurance methodology

SKILLS

  • Some specialist skills and knowledge in medical or scientific equipment relevant to the working area
  • Standard driving skills
  • Ability to provide accurate oral and written reports
  • Ability to perform quality assurance measurements on ultrasound scanners or other electronic equipment
  • Ability to plan own workload within set priorities

EXPERIENCE

  • Some previous experience of working with medical or scientific equipment relevant to the working area
  • Previous experience of computing, quality management, medical physics or a related subject
  • Previous experience of working with ultrasound scanners or other medical imaging equipment
  • Previous experience of working with staff from NHS or other medical imaging departments

QUALIFICATIONS

  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in a science, engineering or radiologyrelated subject
  • GCSE Grade C in English Language and Mathematics, or equivalent
  • Additional theoretical or applied training to diploma equivalent level
  • Clean, full driving licence
