Main duties of the job
The Departmental Nurse Manager is responsible for providing operational, clinical and professional leadership to the nursing team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, efficient and safe patient care within the Emergency Department.
Key responsibilities include leading, supervising and supporting the nursing workforce to deliver excellent standards of emergency care in line with evidence-based practice, national standards and clinical guidelines. The post holder will promote a positive, collaborative and supportive working environment that encourages effective communication, teamwork and continuous professional development.
The Departmental Nurse Manager will also play a key role in workforce planning, recruitment and retention, ensuring the department is appropriately staffed to meet service demands. Working closely with the multidisciplinary team, they will drive quality improvement initiatives, support performance management and contribute to the achievement of departmental, organisational and national objectives.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Accountable 24 hours a day/7 days a week for the quality of care delivered within the ward/unit environment to ensure patients are treated with care and compassion.
- To work in partnership with the Lead Nurses to deliver the Clinical Business Unit objectives.
- Responsible and accountable for all professional and operational nursing issues.
- The post holder will provide professional clinical nursing leadership for the ward/unit.
- Accountable for the quality of patient care delivered across the ward/unit environment including skill mix and risk management ensuring continuous improvement in clinical care standards and that patients are treated with dignity and respect.
- Responsible for the direct line management and development of the ward/department.
- In collaboration with the Lead Nurse and Divisional Director of Nursing, the post holder will be involved in the planning and implementation of developments relating to nursing.
- Responsible for working in collaboration with the Infection Prevention Control team to ensure the coordination and implementation of all IPC policies.
- Work in collaboration with the Lead Nurse in the implementation of the Patient Experience and Engagement Strategy within the Emergency Department.
- Ensure effective and prompt reporting of nursing issues and concerns to Lead Nurse and Divisional Director of Nursing
- Responsible for leading and developing Patient Safety Culture at departmental level.
- To act as a role model and promote the Trust values & behaviours.
- To be responsible for safeguarding all vulnerable adults and children within the ward area.
Person specification
Knowledge
- Current knowledge of emergency nursing practice and the delivery of urgent and emergency care services.
- 3 years Emergency Department experience
- Awareness of national and local targets relating to Emergency Department performance and patient experience.
- Previous ward/department management experience, including responsibility for staff supervision, performance management and service delivery.
