Job overview
East Midlands Cancer Alliance has provided 12 months' funding for Band 7 Trainee Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) posts within Breast Services at University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN). These roles will support the development of a sustainable Breast ANP workforce, enhance the Northamptonshire Breast Pain Pathway, increase clinic capacity across both breast units, improve patient flow through the Two-Week Wait (2WW) pathway, and contribute to achieving Faster Diagnosis Standards.
The post holder will be an NMC-registered nurse who holds, or is willing to work towards, a Master's-level qualification. Working under the supervision of experienced Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Breast Care Nurses, they will develop advanced clinical knowledge, assessment skills, and clinical decision‑making capabilities.
The role will involve supporting patients across 2WW, follow‑up, post‑operative and mastalgia clinics at Kettering General Hospital, Northampton General Hospital, Nene Park Outpatients Department, and community settings. The post holder will work closely with the multidisciplinary team, consultant colleagues, and the Lead ANP to develop clinical competencies and contribute to the ongoing development of breast services.
Through supervised practice, reflective learning, and portfolio development, the Trainee ANP will progress towards autonomous practice and advanced clinical expertise, supporting high‑quality, patient‑centred care across Northamptonshire Breast Services.
Main duties of the job
- Undertake a structured clinical and academic programme towards Advanced Clinical Practitioner status within Breast Surgery.
- Provide patient care under the supervision of the Breast multidisciplinary team.
- Perform holistic assessments and support the planning, delivery and evaluation of care across the breast pathway.
- Develop advanced clinical assessment, diagnostic and decision‑making skills through supervised practice.
- Support timely investigation, diagnosis and treatment in line with protocols.
- Complete competency‑based training, including imaging and radiology competencies.
- Participate in consultant‑led, nurse‑led and follow‑up clinics across the patient pathway.
- Communicate effectively with patients, carers and colleagues, including in sensitive situations.
- Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to deliver holistic care.
- Contribute to audit, research, service development and quality improvement.
- Maintain accurate records and comply with Trust policies, professional standards and the NMC Code.
- Engage in education, supervision and portfolio development to achieve advanced practice competencies.

New employees who do not join the update service will be required to pay £49.50 for a new DBS check in 3 years time.
