Consultant in Gynaecology with interest in Urgent Suspected Cancer

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country. It provides a wide range of general and specialist clinical services and is a base for medical education, training and research. The Trust comprises four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton Hospital in Banbury.

This is one of three new consultant posts, part of a planned expansion to meet increased demand in urgent suspected cancer. The department is seeking a capable and motivated doctor who enjoys working in a tertiary referral service and wishes to effect change and improve care for patients within this service.

The postholder will join an existing team of 18 NHS Gynaecologists / Gynaeoncologists and 5 University of Oxford Clinical Academics, who together provide both a local gynaecology service to the population of Oxford and a highly specialist tertiary service in Gynae-oncology, Urogynaecology, reproductive medicine, and endometriosis.

The focus of this post is to oversee and streamline care for women referred on an urgent suspected cancer pathway. The successful candidate will be expected to strengthen the link between the benign gynaecology diagnostic service and the Gynaeoncology team. The successful candidate will have the ATSM in oncology and be competent at laparoscopic hysterectomy.

Main duties of the job include:

• Location: The post-holder’s duties will be primarily at the Horton General and John Radcliffe Hospitals but it is a condition of the appointment that the post holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations.
• Clinical: The successful applicant may be required to work across all sites. The successful candidate will ideally be able to support all urgent suspected cancer pathways, including hysteroscopy, colposcopy and surgery, both open and laparoscopically.
• The post-holder will be expected to undertake theatre lists (the majority of the surgery undertaken is minimal access) at the John Radcliffe hospital (including regular (1:4) weekend lists) and at the Horton Hospital in Banbury as required.
• The post holder will manage in-patients at the John Radcliffe Hospital and undertake gynaecology on-call duties of no more frequent than 1:10, paid at a Band A supplement.

Qualifications required include:

• Primary medical qualification MBBS/MBCHB MRCOG/FRCOG CCT or equivalent (or be within 6 months of CCT at the time of application)
• ATSM in gynaecological oncology
• Higher medical degree

Work Experience:

• Evidence of advanced skills in laparoscopic gynaecology including total laparoscopic hysterectomy for low grade endometrial carcinoma
• Experience managing and treating emergency gynaecology cases.
• Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients in a tertiary setting
• Evidence of experience working within a multidisciplinary team
• Evidence of having worked at consultant level in a teaching hospital
• Willingness to contribute to the medically complex TOP service

Organisation and Management Experience:

• Evidence of involvement with project leadership within Gynaecology
• Evidence of having implemented change within the clinical setting
• Evidence of authorship of clinical guidelines at a local or national level.
• Effective administrative and time management skills.
• Training in clinical management

Teaching:

• Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training for O&G trainees
• Evidence of ability to teach practical skills e.g. laparoscopy

Clinical governance and audit:

• Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities
• Evidence of undertaking serious incident investigations
• Evidence of having changed practice as a result of audit
