Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Clinical Genetics Unit, based at Birmingham Women's Hospital, to join our WGS team.

The Clinical Genetics Unit provides diagnostic, counselling and support for individuals who have, or are at risk of a variety of inherited conditions.

This post is primarily office based but there may be some scope for flexible working.

If you have experience within the NHS of Microsoft Office packages and databases, of providing administration support to a clinical team, have excellent verbal and written skills, the ability to prioritise and work under pressure and are a conscientious team worker, then we would like to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

The role would suit an enthusiastic, highly organised administrator who has the capacity to work under pressure and to tight deadlines, with an aptitude for multi-tasking. The candidate should also have a high level of attention to detail, strong decision making skills and the ability to effectively manage their time and workload. The post requires good IT skills, working knowledge of Word and Excel and the ability to communicate well with both NHS staff and the general public both over the telephone and face to face.

The post holder should be educated to GCSE level or equivalent in English with accurate keyboard skills and also have good communication and be able to manage their own time and work on their own initiative as well as part of a team. Previous experience of working in the NHS along with RSA III would be desirable.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will assist the secretarial and administrative team within the Clinical Genetics Unityou will work collaboratively to provide an essential comprehensive secretarial service. There arealso opportunities to support the leadership team in key areas, ensuring that services meet
operational needs.

The role will be based at Lavender House at Birmingham Women's hospital. The successfulcandidate will be working alongside PAs in the Clinical Genetics Administration Team. The day today role will include contact with the wider Admin team, patients and clinician groups.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • GCSE Grade C or equivalent in English Language
  • AMSPAR or other word processing qualification
  • Medical Terminology or equivalent experience

Knowledge

  • Working in a busy administrative role
  • Previous administration experience
  • Handling telephone and email queries
  • Ability to perform to a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Proficient in Microsoft Packages
  • Experience of working in the NHS or other healthcare setting

Skills

  • Good team working, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent IT skills, including use of word, excel and patient database
  • Understand patient confidentiality and right
