The Adult and Specialist Rehabilitation Division of BCHC is looking to recruit a Trainee Rehabilitation Engineer (Clinical Technologist ). The successful applicant will undertake the IPEM Clinical Technologist Training Scheme with the intention of meeting the requirements of the Register of Clinical Technologists or the Academy of Healthcare Science Register.

The position we are recruiting to is that of a Trainee Rehabilitation Engineer to based with predominantly Warwickshire Wheelchair Service. You will already have suitable qualifications such as a mechanical or medical engineering degree or alternative qualifications with relevant experience to be eligible to join the IPEM Clinical Technologist Training Scheme

Main duties of the job

We require a trainee Rehabilitation Engineer (healthcare science practitioner / clinical tecnologist) to undergo a formal training programme to become a qualified member of our Rehabilitation Engineering team to support our future staff needs

The position is patient facing and very hands on with respect to using hand tools to adjust and fit equipment. You will be required you to build a portfolio of evidence throughout the 2 year scheme which together with observed practice will be assessed by IPEM Moderators.

The Rehabilitation Engineer Service is based in Selly Oak, Birmingham however the training placement is primarily based at Warwickshire Wheelchair Service (Leamington Spa and Nuneaton). However, some placements and learning opportunities will be based at other locations, generally within the West Midlands. The aim of this post being to grow the clinical capacity at these Wheelchair Services

Upon successful completion of the Training Scheme you wil be eligible to join the Register for Clinical Technologists allowing you to apply for qualified Rehabilitation Engineer positions within our service.

As part of of a Rehabilitation Engineering Team of over 25 staff you will participate in an active CPD and Clinical Supervision programme.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Complete an approved training plan identified in the Rehabilitation Engineer Training scheme,to enable registration with the Register for Clinical Technologists / Health Professions Council as a Clinical Technologist (Rehabilitation Engineer).

Clinical work experience may take place at hospitals clinics, schools, other institutions and on domiciliary visits. This is a patient facing role

Use of tools to carry out the adjustment of mechanical and electrical equipment

Use IT equipment to write reports, use email. Specialist use of IT equipment required using a computer aided drawing system, a stability assessment system and pressure measuring equipment and wheelchair programming tools.

Person specification

Qualification

  • Engineering / Science Degree (BSc / BEng)
  • Degree in Mechanical or biomechanical Engineering

Experience

  • The ability to work within an ISO13485 Quality System
  • Experience working with people with disability, wheelchairs and/ or seating desirable

Skills

  • Good Communication Skills. Ability to express themselves clearly both orally and in writing
  • Ability to analyse simple engineering problems
  • Ability to relate to people with disabilities and show empathy
  • Ability to effectively use hand tools
  • Ability to analyse simple biomechanical problems
  • Knowledge of Wheelchairs and Seating

Personal Qualities

  • Very Flexible Positive, energetic, enthusiastic in outlook and able to set a good example Ability to manage under pressure; work to tight deadlines, evidencing excellent time management, Able to work independently or as part of a team

In accordance with UK Home Office requirements, Band 2 clinical and non-clinical roles and Band 3 Non-Clinical roles are not eligible for sponsorship.

Please note that the majority of non-clinical roles (Agenda for Change Band 3 - 6) with the exception of those which appear on this list - link , will not meet the minimum requirements set by UK Visas and Immigration to sponsor candidates to work in the UK.

All non-clinical roles (Agenda for Change Bands 7 - 9) that meet the prescribed skill level (RQF 6) and salary threshold will be eligible for sponsorship.

DBS Costs

Please be aware that all new employees starting work with the Trust will be charged for the cost of their DBS check if it is required for the role. The cost will be deducted from your salary in 3 payments over a 3-month period once you start employment. By applying for this role, you are agreeing to these deductions being made. The charges for the DBS include the administration fee. The total costs are £26.40 for a standard check and £54.40 for an enhanced check. The level of check will be determined by the post you are applying for. For bank Workers the full cost of the DBS check (as detailed above) will be deducted from your pay following completion of your online mandatory training. No payment will be made for your online training until it is all complete and verified by the Temporary Staffing Team. Please note: You will not be able to work any bank shifts until you have completed your mandatory training, and your DBS is in place.
