A fantastic opportunity to join a well-established, UK-wide services business as a Systems Accountant, based in Birmingham City Centre, paying £55,000 – £70,000. This is a pivotal role at the heart of the finance function, with a genuine focus on system improvement and integration across different projects, automation, and the responsible use of AI. You’ll lead the way on shaping and improving finance systems while also overseeing a small management accounts team, working closely with the Director of Finance to define how finance operates for the future. This role has a hybrid working arrangement with only 2 days in the office.
Main Duties
- Take ownership of the day-to-day running of all finance systems, keeping them reliable, accurate, and performing at their best.
- Act as the main link to the external technology partner, building a strong working relationship that keeps systems maintained, issues resolved, and future improvements moving forward.
- Plan and deliver system upgrades and enhancements from end to end – covering testing, roll-out, and keeping internal stakeholders informed throughout.
- Lead the design and introduction of new finance systems, alongside enhancements to the platforms already in place.
- Identify and roll out automation and AI-enabled tools – such as workflow automation, intelligent reconciliation, and smarter reporting – to streamline finance processes.
- Oversee the management accounts team and the production of accurate monthly management accounts.
- Map finance processes from start to finish, pinpointing where automation, standardisation, and AI can add the most value.
- Build and maintain clear process maps and documentation, including system controls and dependencies.
- Safeguard the accuracy, consistency, and integrity of data across every finance system and source.
- Support richer reporting and dashboards, drawing on AI-supported analytics to sharpen forecasting, trend analysis, and decision-making.
- Be the go-to contact for systems queries, training, and user support, helping colleagues grow in confidence with new tools.
- Keep finance systems well-controlled and compliant, supporting audit activity and ensuring any AI and automation is adopted responsibly.
Location / Office / Culture
This role is hybrid, with 2 days a week in a modern Birmingham City Centre office and the remainder from home. You’ll be part of a collaborative finance function within a stable, UK-wide business, working alongside the Director of Finance and wider colleagues across finance, data, and technology. It’s a genuinely forward-looking environment where you’ll have the autonomy to influence how finance systems evolve.
What We Are Looking For
- ACA / ACCA / CIMA qualified – strongly preferred, though not essential, with those qualified by experience also considered.
- Proven experience implementing, upgrading, or supporting finance systems (e.g. ERP, purchase order, or budgeting and forecasting tools).
- A strong grasp of core finance processes and how finance systems fit together.
- A track record of delivering automation or system-driven efficiencies within finance.
- Confident analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to turn data into meaningful insight.
- Experience leading and motivating a team.
- Exposure to Power BI or AI-enabled finance tools is desirable, but not essential.
