Data Engineering at Trainline
At the heart of our Data Team, Data Engineers play a pivotal role by creating pipelines and tables that power impactful dashboards, enable self‑service analytics, and support innovative machine learning models and real‑time data products. Data Engineers work alongside BI Developers and Data Scientists in cross‑functional teams. They are given high levels of autonomy and freedom to innovate, with clear progression plans and training opportunities through Data Camp.
Responsibilities
- Make our data lake more accessible and insightful by working on new data marts and designing data models for all users
- Build data pipelines with Spark or DBT
- Transform data into meaningful insights using SQL
- Build and deploy infrastructure with Terraform
- Implement DDL and DML with Iceberg
- Review code with peers
- Orchestrate pipelines with DAGs on Airflow
- Participate in SCRUM ceremonies (stand‑ups, back‑logs, demos, retros, planning)
- Secure data with IAM and AWS Lake Formation
- Deploy changes with Jenkins and GitHub Actions
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Data Engineer using SQL and Python
- Experience with data lakes in AWS, Glue Catalog and Athena (or equivalent)
- Good experience with DBT
- Capable of using popular data‑modelling tools to create diagram of proposed tables
- Good communication skills, comfortable presenting to technical and non‑technical users
- Experience with Apache Airflow to create DAGs
- Ability to work within Agile, considering MVPs, story‑pointing and sprints
