This role is responsible for leading TQUK’s internal audit function, providing independent assurance over the effectiveness of governance, risk management and internal controls across the organisation.
The Audit Manager is a champion of independence, objectivity and robust challenge. They are methodical, evidence-led and comfortable asking difficult questions, with a relentless focus on assurance, comparability and consistency.
The postholder will design and deliver a proportionate, risk-based audit programme, working closely with the Head of Audit, Risk and Compliance, senior leaders and third-party internal auditors. Their scope will extend beyond regulatory compliance alone, covering operational, financial, governance and strategic risks, drawing on subject matter expertise where required.
This is an ideal role for someone with experience in internal audit in a regulated or complex environment, who is motivated by embedding best practice and providing meaningful assurance that supports sustainable growth.
Key responsibilities
- Design, implement and maintain TQUK’s internal audit framework, methodology and standards.
- Develop and deliver a risk-based internal audit plan, including coordination of internal and third-party audit activity.
- Manage the relationship with third-party internal auditors, ensuring audits are well scoped, effectively delivered and value adding.
- Lead the planning, execution and reporting of internal audits, ensuring findings are evidence-based, proportionate and clearly articulated.
- Provide independent assurance to the Leadership Team and Executive on the effectiveness of internal controls, governance and risk management.
- Track audit actions and ensure timely completion, escalating concerns where appropriate.
- Ensure audit activity remains independent from advisory and operational decision-making outside of formal audits.
- Maintain high-quality audit trails, documentation and reporting aligned to recognised internal audit standards.
- Produce clear, insightful reports for the Head of Audit, Risk and Compliance, including themes, trends and emerging risks.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement and assurance across the organisation.
Other responsibilities
- Line manage Auditors, providing clear direction, coaching and professional development.
- Work closely with Risk and Compliance colleagues to ensure alignment across the ARC function.
- Work with the Head of Audit, Risk and Compliance to ensure audit priorities align with organisational risk and strategic objectives.
- Represent TQUK at audit, governance or assurance-related forums where required.
- Keep abreast of developments in internal audit standards, governance and best practice.
- Maintain a strong knowledge of sector developments and TQUK products, systems and processes.
- Undertake other duties considered within your skill and competence to support the effective running of the business.
Essential Skills/Experience/Qualifications
- Proven experience in internal audit, assurance or a related function.
- Experience designing or delivering risk-based audit programmes.
- Strong report-writing skills with the ability to communicate complex issues clearly.
Desirable Skills/Experience/Qualifications
- Experience working in regulated, public sector, education or similarly complex environments.
- Professional qualification or working towards one (e.g. IIA, ACCA, ACA, CIMA).
