About the Role

We are seeking skilled and resilient Social Workers to join our Emergency Duty Team (EDT), a fast‑paced, dynamic service providing urgent social work support outside normal working hours. This is a unique opportunity to safeguard vulnerable children, adults, and families at times of crisis, ensuring they receive the protection and care they need.

  • Provide emergency social work interventions to vulnerable individuals and families, including those at risk of harm, people with disabilities, and individuals experiencing acute mental health crises.
  • Act as an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) under the Mental Health Act 1983 (2007), where required.
  • Undertake child protection enquiries and assessments with adults at risk, making immediate and informed decisions to safeguard their welfare.
  • Complete timely, proportionate assessments, analysing information, circumstances, and presenting risks across a wide range of service areas.
  • Ensure safety planning, making vulnerable or high‑risk individuals safe until daytime services resume.
  • Work collaboratively with key partners, including the Police, emergency services, Community Mental Health Teams, Housing, Social Care, residential provisions and the Youth Offending Service to deliver a coordinated emergency response.
  • Share information efficiently, ensuring relevant details are passed on to appropriate teams for follow‑up or further assessment.
  • Attend staff meetings, Courts, and case conferences when required.
  • Maintain accurate, up‑to‑date records in line with departmental policies using the appropriate IT systems.
  • Prepare and present reports to a range of professional forums.
  • Engage in reflective practice, supervision, and ongoing professional development to maintain high standards of social work practice.
  • Carry out any additional duties appropriate to the role, as directed by the Senior Practitioner or Service Manager.

You will have a strong understanding of key legislation, including:

  • Children Act 1989 (and awareness of the Children Act 2004)
  • Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended in 2007)
  • Care Act 2014

You will be able to apply this knowledge confidently when making proportionate, evidence‑based decisions. You remain calm and resilient under pressure, demonstrate sound judgement in challenging situations, and show compassion and respect in all interactions with the people we support.

Additional Information

The salary for this position is Band 8 £40,777 to £42,839 with a 20% Out of Hours enhancement, an AMHP allowance of £1,745 and Market Supplement of £3,366. An enhanced/basic DBS Check with children/adults barred list will be required. Any appointment made to this role will be subject to the appointable candidate being vetted under Greater Manchester Police clearance processes. A requirement of the vetting process is a minimum of 3 years residency in the UK. You will be required to drive in this role. You will be asked for a copy of your driving license as part of the recruitment process. You will be required to work on a rota and an unsocial hour’s allowance will be paid.
