About the Role
We are seeking a strategic and hands-on Head of Engineering to lead and inspire our engineering team. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping the technical direction, culture, and operational excellence of a growing technology organisation. You will work closely with the CTO and other key stakeholders to drive innovation, deliver high-quality products, and position the team for scalable growth.
With demonstrated success in this role, the candidate will have the opportunity to be considered for the future Group CTO position. Structured coaching and development will be provided to support this journey.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership and Talent:
– Build, lead and inspire a high-performing engineering team.
– Foster a generative culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement.
– Mentor and support team members in their personal development.
– Ensure the team have the required skills, knowledge, competencies and tooling to deliver the business goals.
– Identify and attract top talent and champion diversity. - Delivery:
– Oversee the delivery of product features and projects, ensuring they are on time, within scope, and aligned with business objectives.
– Manage risk and look for actionable mitigations.
– Ensure the delivery process is continuously optimised and measurably improved.
– Build strong relationships and work closely with your counterparts in other departments/disciplines. - Stakeholder management:
– Act as the primary engineering interface with stakeholders across the business.
– Provide regular updates on engineering progress, challenges, and opportunities.
– Work to align engineering with key areas of the business. - Engineering Budget:
– Ensure all aspects of the Engineering budget are forecast and tracked.
– Make strong business cases for additional spend.
– Build a keen awareness of cost in the team. - Scale:
– Make decisions which balance the needs of today with those of tomorrow.
– Highlight blockers of scale early and where necessary propose remediation. - Architecture:
– Make certain the platform architecture enables swift and safe delivery of product features. - Technology Strategy:
– Work closely with the CTO to help shape and give life to a technology strategy which supports and enables the business strategy.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Proven experience leading distributed engineering teams in a high-growth, outcome focused environment.
- Strong technical background with experience in scalable architecture, DevOps/Platform Engineering practices, and software development methodologies.
- Exceptional leadership and team management skills, with a track record of building and developing high-performing teams.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience with Agile development processes and modern Lean delivery practices.
- Familiarity with operating in a remote-first organisation and managing across time zones.
