Position

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The role sits within the Business Solutions Team, turning business requirements into detailed specifications for our in‑house Development Team. You will lead the definition and development of standard calculations, design processes to align new calculation requirements with our operating model, and mentor junior staff. The role demands keen attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of the Trafalgar House methodology and process for calculation development, from specification through to testing, documentation and sign off, ensuring dependencies on other systems and business tasks are documented and maintained.
  • Develop subject‑matter expertise and provide training and guidance on the methodology to other staff, ensuring consistent application.
  • Peer‑review team work and complete detailed analysis of new and existing calculations, scheme rules, technical documentation and legislation to produce detailed calculation specifications.
  • Collaborate and communicate with analysts, developers, client project analysts, technical and operations teams regarding implementations, projects and change.
  • Work with the Project Manager/CRM to prepare estimates for tasks, scope, effort and time‑scales, evaluate risks and issues, and support business development opportunities.
  • Support the Product Manager on new and existing product development related to calculations and support business development opportunities.
  • Interpret client needs, carry out analysis, and make recommendations for simplification, rationalisation and automation.
  • Carry out testing on deliveries from developers before passing to UAT, produce detailed test plans and document findings for projects and clients.
  • Manage interaction with third parties such as scheme actuaries and legal teams to clarify complex queries.
  • Staff management and reviews with direct reports.
  • Analyse root causes of errors and seek improvements in methods.
  • Produce end‑user documentation and maintain quality and assurance standards.
  • Keep up‑to‑date with pension technical and industry developments and support the introduction and adoption of new procedures through documentation and communication.
  • Investigate and suggest ideas to improve efficiency and quality of service, including researching new software solutions.
  • Maintain knowledge of ISO 27001 policies and procedures.

Professional Qualities – Essential

  • Ability to read, understand and extract detailed and complex technical information from scheme rules and documentation, and translate it into calculation development specifications.
  • Detailed understanding of DB calculations – retirement, transfer and death calculations.
  • Strong technical knowledge of Defined Benefit and Defined Contribution pension schemes, current pension legislation and awareness of upcoming changes.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills; strong numeracy and analytical problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple exercises simultaneously.
  • A‑Level or equivalent; GCSE English and mathematics (A‑C).
  • Five years or more prior experience in pension calculations analysis and pension administration.
  • Highly computer‑literate with extensive experience of pension administration systems.
  • Strong MS Office skills, especially Excel (including formula creation), Word.

Desirable

  • PMI qualification.
  • Good understanding of project management.
  • Prior experience of pension scheme implementation projects.
  • Experience delivering projects to specification, time and budget.
  • Experience driving performance within a team to realise individual potential.
  • Knowledge of coding.
