Overview

SEMH Therapeutic Learning Practitioner – exceptional practitioners wanted to transform lives. This role supports children and young people with complex Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs through a therapeutic, relational, and holistic learning approach. The position focuses on trauma-informed practice, attachment-aware care, and restorative approaches to foster emotional safety and meaningful progress through relationships, consistency, and compassion.

Responsibilities

  • Support children and young people with SEMH, trauma, attachment difficulties, emotional dysregulation, neurodiversity, and complex behavioural needs through a therapeutic, relational learning approach.
  • Interpret behaviour using a clinical and relational lens to identify distress, unmet needs, and developmental trauma rather than responding to behaviour alone.
  • Demonstrate exceptional emotional resilience, self-awareness, and the ability to remain calm, reflective, and emotionally available during periods of crisis.
  • Apply co-regulation, de-escalation, conflict resolution, and restorative practices to support pupil progress.
  • Contribute professionally within multidisciplinary teams, collaborating with therapists, educators, families, and external agencies.
  • Create personalised learning experiences that engage pupils who have experienced repeated educational failure.
  • Uphold safeguarding, professional integrity, and evidence-informed practice.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Significant experience working with children and young people presenting with SEMH, trauma, attachment difficulties, emotional dysregulation, neurodiversity, and complex behavioural needs.
  • Sophisticated understanding of trauma-informed, attachment-aware, and therapeutic practice with consistent, effective implementation beyond theory.
  • Strong emotional intelligence, resilience, and capacity to remain reflective and professional in challenging environments.
  • Advanced skills in co-regulation, de-escalation, conflict resolution, and restorative practice.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and partners, including families and external agencies.
  • Commitment to safeguarding, professional integrity, and evidence-informed practice.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Backgrounds in: Specialist SEMH education, therapeutic education, educational psychology, CAMH, counselling or psychotherapy, youth work, social work, residential care, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, behaviour analysis and Positive Behaviour Support.
  • Additional training in Trauma-Informed Practice, Attachment Theory, PACE, Team Teach, Positive Behaviour Support, Mental Health First Aid, or restorative approaches is advantageous.
