Overview

Location: Wigan (secondary school)

Start date: ASAP / Immediate start

Duration: Minimum 3 months (potential to extend)

Working hours: 10:00am - 4:00pm (Monday to Friday)

Pay: From 14.24 per hour (weekly pay)

School Caretaker duties & responsibilities

  • Maintain the school premises, buildings and grounds to a high standard, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Carry out site security tasks including opening/closing procedures, locking/unlocking, alarm checks and monitoring access.
  • Complete routine caretaking, site inspections and basic compliance checks (e.g., reporting hazards, supporting fire safety routines).
  • Undertake minor repairs and general maintenance (DIY, basic plumbing, painting, fixtures/fittings) and log any larger works required.
  • Support health and safety on site, keeping walkways clear, identifying risks and escalating issues promptly.
  • Liaise with and supervise contractors and deliveries, ensuring work is completed safely and on schedule.
  • Assist with moving furniture, setting up rooms for school events, meetings, exams and after‑school activities.
  • Help maintain tidy external areas (litter picks, bins, basic grounds work) and support cleaning teams where needed.

What we're looking for

  • Previous experience as a School Caretaker, Site Supervisor, Premises Officer, Facilities Assistant or similar maintenance/caretaking role (school experience desirable).
  • Good practical skills with the ability to complete basic repairs and maintenance tasks efficiently.
  • Working knowledge of health & safety and a proactive approach to site compliance.
  • Reliable, punctual and able to work independently while communicating effectively with school staff.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service is desirable, or willingness to apply for an Enhanced DBS through Tradewind.
