Social Emotional Mental Health Support Assistants Needed in Rochdale! Are you looking for a rewarding role supporting primary-age pupils? Tradewind Recruitment is hiring Support Assistants to work with Rochdale's Pupil Referral Service for primary children with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs.

Working Hours:

  • Monday to Thursday: 8:30 am - 3:15 pm
  • Friday: 8:30 am - 1:45 pm

These are full-time temporary roles with strong potential to become permanent. Please note: These are full-time roles and cannot be offered on a part-time basis. Due to the complex social, emotional, and mental health needs of the students, consistency is absolutely vital. Breaks in support can significantly impact their progress and wellbeing. In some cases, inconsistent support has been linked to a heightened risk of crisis, including serious mental health deterioration. We are therefore looking for committed individuals who understand the importance of reliable, ongoing support for vulnerable young people.

The Role:

  • Support children aged 5-11 with SEMH needs
  • Provide 1:1 and small group support
  • Help deliver personalised learning and support positive behaviour
  • Encourage emotional regulation, confidence, and social skills development
  • Work closely with families and professionals to support each child's success

What We’re Looking For:

  • TA qualifications are welcome but not essential
  • At least 3 months' recent experience working with young children (school, youth work, clubs, etc.)
  • Calm, patient, and confident in managing behaviour
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Passionate about helping vulnerable young learners thrive

We encourage applicants from backgrounds including youth work, sports coaching, care, counselling, and community support.

Why Join Tradewind?

  • Competitive pay rates
  • Access to over 2,500 free training courses
  • Referral bonuses available
  • Local payroll and dedicated support team
  • Flexible holiday pay
  • Social and networking events

How to prepare for a job interview at Tradewind Recruitment

✨Know Your SEMH Stuff

Make sure you brush up on your understanding of social, emotional, and mental health needs. Familiarise yourself with common challenges faced by primary-age pupils and think about how you can support them effectively. This will show that you're genuinely interested in the role and ready to make a difference.

✨Showcase Your Experience

Be prepared to discuss your previous experience working with children, especially in settings that involve behaviour management or emotional support. Think of specific examples where you've made an impact, whether through youth work, coaching, or any relevant roles. This will help demonstrate your suitability for the position.

✨Highlight Teamwork Skills

Since you'll be working closely with families and professionals, it's crucial to showcase your teamwork abilities. Share examples of how you've collaborated with others in past roles, and emphasise your communication skills. This will reassure the interviewers that you can work well within a team to support the children's needs.

✨Prepare Questions

Interviews are a two-way street, so come armed with thoughtful questions about the role and the school environment. Ask about their approach to supporting SEMH needs or how they measure success for their pupils. This shows that you're engaged and serious about finding the right fit for both you and the school.
