We are seeking an experienced Design Technician to lead the day-to-day management of workshops, resources, and technical support across the Design & Technology department. The role is based in a well-established Northampton secondary school, with a permanent appointment preferred (fixed-term arrangements considered for the right candidate).
Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate technical support across the Design & Technology department
- Prepare, organise, and maintain materials, equipment, tools, and machinery for practical lessons
- Support teaching staff and students during practical activities and demonstrations
- Oversee the maintenance, servicing, and safe operation of workshop equipment
- Manage stock levels, budgets, ordering processes, and resource allocation
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, risk assessments, and COSHH requirements
- Conduct regular safety inspections and maintain accurate records
- Support GCSE and A-Level practical assessments, coursework projects, and departmental events
- Assist in developing workshop systems and procedures to ensure efficient departmental operations
- Provide guidance and support to other technicians where appropriate
The Ideal Candidate
- Previous experience working as a Design Technician, Senior Technician, or in a similar technical role
- Strong practical knowledge of workshop equipment, machinery, materials, and manufacturing processes
- Excellent understanding of health and safety procedures within a workshop environment
- Highly organised with strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Able to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively
- Experience within an educational setting is desirable but not essential
- Relevant technical qualifications or industry experience would be advantageous
