Are you a qualified or experienced British Sign Language (BSL) user with a passion for inclusive education? Tradewind Recruitment is delighted to be working in partnership with a number of welcoming primary and secondary schools across Northampton to recruit a dedicated BSL Specialist Teaching Assistant to support deaf and hard-of-hearing pupils.

This is a highly rewarding role for someone who is committed to breaking down communication barriers and ensuring that every child has equal access to learning. You will play a vital role in helping pupils engage fully in the classroom, build confidence, and achieve their full academic and social potential.

The Role

As a BSL Specialist Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with class teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals to provide tailored support for pupils who use BSL as their primary or preferred method of communication. Your responsibilities may include:

  • Interpreting lessons and classroom instructions into BSL
  • Supporting pupils 1:1 or in small groups to reinforce learning
  • Assisting with speech, language, and communication development
  • Helping pupils to access the wider school curriculum and social activities
  • Supporting emotional wellbeing and social inclusion
  • Contributing to individual education plans (IEPs) and reviews

Opportunities are available across both primary and secondary schools, allowing you to work with a range of age groups and learning needs.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Hold a recognised BSL qualification (Level 2 or above - Level 3 preferred)
  • Have experience working with deaf or hard-of-hearing children or young people
  • Demonstrate a patient, empathetic, and flexible approach
  • Have strong communication and teamwork skills

  • Have knowledge of SEN, EHCPs, and inclusive teaching practices (desirable but not essential)
