A specialist SEMH provision in Milton Keynes is seeking committed and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistants to join their team from September 2026. This setting supports students who require additional emotional and behavioural support to access education, helping them build confidence, resilience, and positive relationships. This is more than a teaching assistant role—it is an opportunity to become a trusted adult, positive role model, and advocate for young people who need support to overcome barriers to learning.

Responsibilities

  • Support students on a 1:1 basis and in small groups with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
  • Build positive, trusting relationships that help students feel safe, understood, and engaged
  • Support pupils to manage emotions, regulate behaviour, and develop coping strategies
  • Work alongside teachers, pastoral staff, and external professionals to implement personalised support plans
  • Use de-escalation techniques and restorative approaches to promote positive behaviour
  • Encourage participation in learning and help students re-engage with education
  • Contribute to a nurturing, structured environment where students can thrive academically and emotionally

Qualifications

  • Passionate about supporting vulnerable young people and making a meaningful difference
  • Demonstrates patience, resilience, and emotional intelligence
  • Has experience working with children or young people in education, youth work, care, sports coaching, or support settings (desirable but not essential)
  • Understands, or is willing to learn about, trauma‑informed practice and SEMH support strategies
  • Able to remain calm and consistent when managing challenging behaviour
  • Works effectively as part of a dedicated multidisciplinary team
