The Opportunity
As a Secondary Cover Supervisor, you will supervise classes when the regular teacher is unavailable, helping to ensure that students remain focused and learning continues as planned. You will work across different subjects and year groups, following pre-prepared lesson plans and resources provided by the school. The role would suit someone who is confident in a classroom, reliable, organised and able to establish clear expectations with students. You should be comfortable managing behaviour, communicating instructions clearly and adapting quickly to different school environments. Day-to-day supply provides the opportunity to experience a range of secondary schools while maintaining flexibility over when you work. It can also be an excellent way to build classroom experience and develop your education career.
Your Responsibilities
As a Secondary Cover Supervisor, you may be responsible for:
- Supervising secondary school classes in the absence of the regular teacher.
- Following lesson plans and resources provided by teaching staff.
- Clearly explaining tasks and expectations to students.
- Managing classroom behaviour calmly, fairly and consistently.
- Maintaining a safe, structured and productive learning environment.
- Monitoring student engagement and ensuring work is completed.
- Supporting students with their learning where appropriate.
- Communicating effectively with teachers and other school staff.
- Reporting any significant behaviour or safeguarding concerns.
- Following school policies, safeguarding procedures and professional expectations.
- Adapting to different subjects, year groups and school environments.
