Teachers must have proper and professional regard for the ethos, policies and practices of the school in which they teach and maintain high standards in their own attendance and punctuality.

In addition to the general duties of a schoolteacher as defined in the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Act, the teacher will have the following duties and responsibilities:

  • To plan and teach stimulating and challenging lessons in flexible and creative ways to engage and motivate groups of primary-aged children with social, emotional and mental health difficulties ensuring that they achieve well in their social, emotional and academic development.
  • To assess, plan for and monitor children's learning needs.
  • To provide reports on children's attainment and progress in line with school policies.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with colleagues, pupils, parents and carers.
  • Performance of all such other tasks as may be reasonably expected of a teacher in accordance with Teachers Pay and Conditions and the Teacher's Standards at all times in accordance with their duty of care towards children.

Some hazards may occur, as faced by all staff working in special needs schools and settings; manual handling, management of difficult behaviour and use of physical intervention, administering medicine. Teachers may be required to carry out other duties as requested by management.

Qualified teacher status (QTS) is required along with an additional recognised SEN qualification. Knowledge and understanding of the EYFS Curriculum and the National Curriculum, including planning strategies, assessment procedures including Assessment for Learning and a good understanding of the curriculum modifications and adaptations that secure broad, balanced and relevant opportunities for children with SEMH difficulties are essential. Knowledge and understanding of theories of child development is also important.
