Science Technician – Role Overview (Brent)

As a Science Technician, you will play a key role in supporting the smooth running of the school\’s science laboratories and helping teachers deliver engaging practical lessons. Your duties will include:

• Preparing, setting up, and clearing away equipment and materials for practical science lessons (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics).

• Ensuring all experiments are safely prepared according to teacher instructions and safety regulations.

• Maintaining laboratory equipment, including routine cleaning, calibration, and repairs where appropriate.

• Managing chemical stock, materials, and equipment inventories.

• Safely storing, labelling, and disposing of chemicals following CLEAPSS and school guidelines.

• Supporting teachers during practical sessions when required.

• Monitoring classroom safety, ensuring equipment is used correctly, and maintaining tidy, organised prep rooms.

• Assisting with ordering and replenishing science materials.

• Carrying out general administrative tasks to support the science department.

Requirements

• A relevant science qualification or strong interest/experience in laboratory work.

• Good understanding of laboratory safety and handling of chemicals.

• Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.

• Excellent communication skills and a proactive, hands‑on approach.

• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

• Previous experience in a school science technician role is desirable but not essential.

• An enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply).
