We are currently recruiting a passionate Physical Education Teacher to join a highly supportive, forward-thinking Alternative Provision (AP) in Burnley. Starting in September 2026, this is a full-time, 5 days a week position supporting young people who thrive outside of a mainstream school environment.
The Role
As our new PE Teacher, you will be responsible for planning and delivering high-quality, inclusive physical education and sports programmes tailored to students with diverse social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs. This isn’t just about traditional school sports; it is about using physical activity, teamwork, and outdoor education as tools to build confidence, resilience, and positive behaviour.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver engaging, adaptive PE sessions across Key Stages 3 and 4, tailoring lessons to meet the varied physical and emotional needs of the learners.
- Manage classroom and sports field behaviour effectively, using positive reinforcement and de-escalation techniques.
- Build strong, trusting relationships with students who may have experienced barriers to learning in mainstream education.
- Assess and monitor progress, celebrating individual milestones and encouraging a lifelong love for fitness and health.
- Collaborate closely with teaching assistants, pastoral teams, and SENDCOs to ensure a holistic approach to student development.
What We Are Looking For
We are seeking an energetic educator who understands that physical education is a vital pathway to emotional well-being.
Essential Criteria:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or QTLS with a specialist in Physical Education (highly experienced Unqualified Teachers or Instructors with an extensive SEMH/Alternative Provision background are also encouraged to apply).
- Proven experience working with students with SEMH, ADHD, ASD, or challenging behaviours within an Alternative Provision, PRU, or special school.
- Excellent communication, active listening, and rapport-building skills.
- Strong, empathetic behaviour management strategies.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
