About the Role
Are you an experienced youth worker, mentor, or passionate educator looking to make a life-changing difference for young people outside of mainstream schooling?
We are currently recruiting a dedicated Outreach Worker / Unqualified Teacher to join a progressive Alternative Provision (AP) serving the Colne and wider East Lancashire area.
This is a temp-to-perm opportunity designed for an adaptable, empathetic, and resilient practitioner. You will work directly with young people (aged 11-16+) who face barriers to education, including Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, neurodivergence, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), or school refusal.
Rather than standard classroom-based teaching, this role is centered on relationship-building, re-engagement, and delivering functional learning tailored to each student's unique pace and interests.
Key Responsibilities
-
1:1 & Small-Group Engagement: Deliver creative, individualized sessions in community venues, outreach hubs, or home environments to re-engage vulnerable learners.
-
Functional Learning & Life Skills: Plan and deliver accessible core subjects (Functional Skills English & Maths), personal development, vocational modules, and essential life skills.
-
Positive Behaviour & De-escalation: Use trauma-informed practice and de-escalation techniques to support students through dysregulation and build emotional resilience.
-
Multi-Agency Collaboration: Liaise regularly with parents/carers, mainstream partner schools, social care, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure holistic wraparound support.
-
Progress Tracking: Monitor attendance, engagement, wellbeing, and academic milestones, providing clear feedback and reports for review meetings.
What We're Looking For
-
Relevant Experience: Demonstrable background working with children or young people with SEMH, complex needs, or disengaged learners (e.g., Youth Work, Alternative Provision, Pupil Referral Units, Mentoring, or Residential Care).
-
Unqualified Teacher / Instructor Capability: While formal QTS is not required, you must have confidence in planning and facilitating engaging, structured learning sessions.
-
Relationship-Centred Approach: Patience, high emotional intelligence, and unconditional positive regard for young people.
-
Driving Licence (Essential): A full UK driving licence and access to a reliable vehicle are required due to the community outreach element across the Colne area.
-
Training (Desirable): Training in Team Teach, MAPA/CPI, or trauma-informed approaches is an advantage (training can be provided).
What's on Offer
-
Competitive salary of up to Β£33,000 per annum (pro-rata / depending on experience).
-
Direct and structured pathway to a permanent contract.
-
A supportive, close-knit team that values staff wellbeing and work-life balance.
-
Ongoing professional development, safeguarding refreshers, and specialist training.
-
The chance to see the tangible impact of your work by helping young people re-discover their potential.
Safeguarding Notice
All applicants will be subject to a rigorous vetting process, including an Enhanced DBS Check (Child Workforce) registered on the Update Service, satisfactory professional references, and right-to-work checks in accordance with statutory safeguarding guidance (KCSIE).
