We are recruiting on behalf of a leading independent healthcare provider for an Ophthalmic Clinical Technician to join a specialist eye care team. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a patient-focused clinical environment, supporting consultants and clinicians in delivering exceptional ophthalmic care across multiple clinic locations. The successful candidate will play a vital role in the patient pathway, undertaking a range of diagnostic investigations, supporting clinical services, and ensuring patients receive a high standard of care from initial assessment through to treatment. This position would suit an experienced Ophthalmic Technician or a healthcare professional with transferable clinical skills and a strong interest in ophthalmology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Duties
    • Support consultant-led clinics and provide a high standard of patient care.
    • Perform a range of ophthalmic diagnostic tests, including:
      • Visual Field Analysis
      • Tonometry
      • Pachymetry
      • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
      • Biometry
      • Visual Acuity Assessments
    • Administer ophthalmic medications, including dilating, anaesthetic, and lubricating eye drops, in accordance with training and protocols.
    • Accurately document patient information and test results.
    • Prepare and support patients throughout diagnostic procedures, providing reassurance and clear explanations.
    • Assist with patient admissions, recovery support, and clinical procedures where required.
    • Ensure clinical equipment is cleaned, maintained, and tested in line with infection control and safety standards.
    • Recognise and escalate clinical concerns, incidents, risks, or safeguarding issues appropriately.
  • Operational & Administrative Responsibilities
    • Support efficient clinic operations and patient flow.
    • Liaise with consultants, administrators, reception teams, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
    • Assist with appointment scheduling and pathway coordination.
    • Manage stock levels and order clinical consumables and pharmaceuticals in line with regulatory requirements.
    • Support the smooth running of satellite and outreach clinics where required.
    • Contribute to service improvement initiatives and help identify opportunities to enhance patient experience and operational efficiency.

About You

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous experience within ophthalmology, healthcare, diagnostics, or a clinical support role.
  • Experience performing ophthalmic diagnostic testing is desirable but not essential, as training may be provided for suitable candidates.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a compassionate patient-centred approach.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • The ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • A commitment to maintaining high clinical, professional, and ethical standards.
  • Good IT and administrative skills, including accurate record keeping.
