Contract Type: Full‑time, Permanent

Salary: £32,640 to 36,720, dependent on experience

Role Purpose

The Dispensing Optician role is key within the dispensing team. They will deliver and fulfil the function of dispensing to the highest professional standard and maintain positive relationships with patients and colleagues. They are the essential link between the consulting room and the dispensing process for patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver exceptional customer service by maintaining a positive, polite, and professional manner in all patient interactions.
  • Complete all administrative tasks accurately and efficiently, ensuring clinical records are thorough, up-to-date, and compliant with GDPR and data protection requirements.
  • Handle financial transactions securely and accurately in line with company procedures.
  • Support Optical Assistants when required, including assisting with patient pre‑screening and general practice duties.
  • Provide support, training and supervision of Dispensing Assistants.
  • Participate in the three‑way handover process between Optometrist and patient, ensuring a smooth and professional transition into the dispensing process.
  • Confidently assist patients in selecting well‑fitting frames and make appropriate lens recommendations, taking precise and accurate measurements using the iPad when applicable.
  • Perform focimetry of lenses and monitor spectacle orders, liaising with suppliers and patients where necessary to maintain efficiency and satisfaction.
  • Ensure all spectacles are quality checked, correctly fitted, and adjusted to the patient’s comfort.
  • Carry out minor spectacle and hearing aid repairs as required.
  • Address and resolve patient concerns promptly, escalating to the manager where appropriate.
  • Work within the scope of your competence and seek support when needed to maintain professional standards.
  • Take pride in personal presentation and the upkeep of the practice environment, ensuring displays and merchandise are well presented at all times.
  • Act as a positive ambassador for the company, promoting its values, reputation, and commitment to excellent patient care.
  • Ensure that you have a thorough awareness of clinical techniques and product availability, through professional journals, attending seminars, training sessions and exhibitions to assist in ensuring that knowledge, CPD points and GOC registration is kept up-to-date.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Previous spectacle dispensing experience is essential.
  • Level 6 Diploma in Ophthalmic dispensing qualification.

Skills and Attributes

  • Excellent communication skills and passion for customer service.
  • IT skills (Word, Excel etc) and good organisational skills.
  • Must be enthusiastic, willing to learn new skills and able to adapt to a role that is often evolving.
