At Haberdashers’ Crayford Academy, the Pastoral and Wellbeing Mentor supports students’ welfare, safeguarding, and personal development. The role involves working closely with students, parents, staff and external agencies to address challenges and promote positive outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Support students in their character and pastoral development under the guidance of the Hub Leader, Designated Safeguarding Lead and the CLT.
  • Engage positively with students, parents, staff and other professionals to embed school values and promote high standards of behaviour, welfare and achievement.
  • Take ownership of students within the allocated hub, including engagement with parents during the day and at extracurricular events.
  • Help students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally by providing support and guidance to overcome challenges.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential and up‑to‑date safeguarding and child‑protection records and report where required.
  • Liaise with safeguarding lead and external agencies for multi‑agency referrals and support.
  • Act as the first point of contact for parents for all matters, providing prompt feedback.
  • Use data to monitor individuals and intervene as necessary, recommending rewards, sanctions and pastoral interventions.
  • Assist with school events, escorts for educational visits and participation in extra‑curricular activities.
  • Promote equal opportunities, student welfare and the ethos of the Trust throughout the academy.
  • Attend professional meetings, training and inset days as required.
  • Support implementation of the school’s Behaviour Management policy and the Haberdashers’ Federation child protection policy.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • GCSE English and Maths, Grade C or above.
  • Qualification related to childcare, social work or education.
  • Experience working with young people in a pastoral role.
  • Experience working with external agencies such as CAMHS or social services.
  • Recent safeguarding experience and knowledge of contextual safeguarding issues.
  • Experience leading team‑around‑the‑child/family meetings.
  • Experience developing and implementing new strategies.
  • Ability to find solutions to complex problems.
  • Understanding of how students learn and potential barriers to learning.
  • Knowledge of school MIS systems.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent ICT, administration, time‑management and self‑motivation skills.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and on own initiative.
  • Experience dealing with disruptive or disenfranchised students.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of leading “team around the child” meetings and attending child‑protection conferences.
  • Ability to deliver training to a variety of audiences.
  • Understanding of the Trust ethos, vision and values.
  • Belief in equality and opportunity for all.
  • Commitment to collaborative working and safeguarding.
  • Passion for subject area.
