Reporting to the Application Gauging Machine Shop Lead, the primary responsibility of the CNC Technician is to set up and operate a variety of CNC machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. The Application CNC Technician will be required to work in accordance with established company practice, follow management instruction and as required undertake in addition to machinist duties, general work requests to support and assist the overall smooth running of the department.
Key Accountabilities
- Programme, set-up, adjust, and operate HAAS controlled CNC machines in order to perform precision turning & milling operations on small batches ranging from 1-off to 50-off parts and STD Production milling.
- Program vertical machining centres using OneCNC CADCAM package.
- Read engineering drawings and understand the specifications and tolerancing.
- Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information in order to determine methods and sequences of the operations needed to produce products.
- Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
- Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines and manufacture bespoke tooling where suitable tooling is not available.
- Machine parts to specifications using manual machine tools such as Bridgeport milling machines and centre lathe.
- Inspect parts and their dimensions using knowledge of mathematics and precision instruments such as micrometres, DTI’s, gauge blocks.
- Follow Management / Team Leader instructions for the efficient delivery of responsibilities.
- Work in accordance with Shopfloor SOP’s.
- Work to set timescales and deadlines.
- Work efficiently and effectively as part of a team.
- Maintain a clean and tidy work area.
- Maintain high levels of Health & Safety at all times.
- Adhere to all PPE / workwear requirements.
- Apply flexible approach to tasks given in a busy working environment.
- Undertake all other reasonable work requests to support / assist the smooth running of the shopfloor.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Formal mechanical and manufacturing engineering qualification (or equivalent).
- Time served apprenticeship.
- Proficient in creation and modification of CNC code ‘at the machine’.
- Experience in a similar high precision environment, with proven understanding of CNC machinist responsibilities.
- Experience machining ferrous and non-ferrous metals including steel, aluminium and brass.
- Experience of programming using CADCAM software advantageous.
- Good level of H&S understanding - safety conscious.
Skills
- Ability to read complex technical / engineering drawings with a good understanding of tolerancing/geometrical tolerancing.
- Excellent level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Methodical & logical approach to work.
