We are looking for a technically skilled and motivated Senior Embedded Engineer to join the Embedded Development Team at MPEC Technology in Derby. This hybrid role offers a balance of on-site collaboration and remote flexibility. In this position, you will play a key role in designing, developing and validating embedded hardware and software for remote event and condition monitoring solutions for rail infrastructure, including signalling assets. This is a broad senior embedded engineering role covering Embedded Linux, RTOS-based systems, firmware development, PCB design, hardware integration and industrial communications. You will work across the full product lifecycle, collaborating with the Product Manager, production team and enterprise software teams to deliver reliable embedded systems that connect field devices with platform-based monitoring solutions.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain embedded software for Embedded Linux and RTOS-based devices
- Develop firmware and application software for data acquisition, diagnostics, device management and communications
- Work with microcontrollers, real-time control, interrupts, timers, drivers and hardware interfaces
- Support PCB design, development, bring-up and hardware/software integration
- Integrate sensors, data loggers, communication modules and board support packages
- Work with protocols including UART, SPI, I²C, RS485, RS422, Modbus, MQTT and TCP/IP
- Use simulation, debugging and test tools to validate embedded hardware and software designs
- Collaborate with enterprise teams to enable reliable data transfer between edge devices and platform systems
System Architecture & Technical Leadership
- Contribute to the design and architecture of embedded systems for new and existing products
- Provide technical input across embedded software, firmware, PCB design and hardware integration
- Support and mentor engineers through design reviews, code reviews and knowledge sharing
- Contribute to project planning, estimation, and risk management using Agile methodologies and Jira
- Promote continuous improvement in design quality, testing, documentation and engineering standards
Testing, Validation & Troubleshooting
- Define and execute validation tests for embedded hardware and software performance, stability and reliability
- Validate designs through bench testing, field feedback and pre-release verification
- Use debugging tools (e.g. GDB, oscilloscopes, logic analysers) to diagnose issues
- Support root-cause analysis and resolution of complex technical challenges
- Use simulations and bench testing to validate designs ahead of release
- Work closely with the Product manager, production team and enterprise software teams
- Support design for manufacture, testability and long-term product support
- Participate in Agile planning, reviews and retrospectives
- Develop scripts and tools (Python, Bash) to support testing, diagnostics, and automation
- Stay informed about developments in embedded systems, IoT, and edge computing
- Identify opportunities to improve system performance, reliability, and maintainability
Skills & Experience
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline
- Proven experience in embedded engineering, ideally within industrial, IoT, rail or infrastructure environments (typically 5+ years)
- Strong C/C++ programming skills for embedded systems
- Hands-on experience with Embedded Linux and RTOS-based systems
- Experience with microcontrollers, firmware development, real-time control and hardware interfaces
- Practical experience with PCB design, board bring-up and hardware debugging
- Experience with data acquisition, diagnostics, device management and communications
- Knowledge of protocols including UART, SPI, I²C, RS485, RS422, Modbus, MQTT and TCP/IP
- Experience with unit testing, integration testing and CI/CD pipelines
- Familiarity with GitLab, SVN, Jira and Agile working practices
- Strong problem-solving, analytical and communication skills
- Experience with Python or Bash scripting
- Knowledge of Yocto, Debian-based embedded Linux systems
- Understanding of IoT security principles, including encryption, authentication, and secure communications
- Experience supporting products through production, deployment and long-term maintenance
