We are seeking an experienced Lead Polymer Engineer to join a global manufacturer based at their Plymouth site. Reporting to the Head of Engineering, the successful candidate will lead a team of Technologists and Technicians whose objective is to develop new materials and products, maintain current formulations, assist in problem solving for manufacturing processes, and support production with product verification and testing activities. This role will also provide technical support to other sites based in the UK.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise the day-to-day operation of the technical team.
- Provide technical support as required by production, sales, marketing, and sister companies, travelling to sites as required.
- Ensure all documentation for materials is kept current and accurate.
- Formulate materials to maximise properties and comply with health & safety legislation.
- Project manage the development and introduction of new materials into production.
- Support New Product and Process Development.
- Test materials and products to customer specifications and prepare reports to feedback results and conclusions.
- Materials selection including contact with raw materials suppliers to evaluate available options, travelling as required to support development projects.
- Ensure employees within area of responsibility are adequately trained and developed, ensuring training documentation and records are completed.
- Support consistent and fair implementation of personnel policies and procedures and report back, manage disciplinary issues in accordance with company policy.
- Play an active role in product and process improvement and the implementation of change.
Essential Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge and Candidate Attributes Required:
- Degree level qualification in materials science or plastics discipline / equivalent.
- Experience within the plastics industry, preferably within an Engineering or Manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of Rubber and Plastic technologies.
- Ability to read Engineering drawings.
- Knowledge of materials and material development.
- Knowledge of international test methods & specifications.
- Relevant skills and experience in Business Improvement Techniques.
- Competent in Microsoft Office programmes (Word, Outlook & Project).
- People Centric Leadership style.
- Takes responsibility for health, safety & environmental requirements and standards, under qualified guidance develops systems and processes to ensure compliance and minimised risks.
