The Finance Manager is responsible for overseeing the company’s accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls and supporting strategic financial decision-making. This role is a key link between day-to-day finance operations and senior leadership within a busy, fast-moving construction environment. This is a hands-on role in a small, close-knit team where no two days are the same. The successful candidate will need a practical mindset and a good sense of humour alongside strong technical ability. Construction isn’t always polished and neither is the environment, so the ability to stay calm, keep things moving, and not take yourself too seriously will go a long way.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards and statutory regulations
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes
- Develop and maintain robust internal controls and financial policies
- Coordinate year-end preparation and act as the main point of contact for external accountants
- Monitor budgets, forecasts, and financial performance against targets
- Provide financial analysis and reporting to support business decision-making
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy
- Supervise and support accounting and finance team members
- Manage tax reporting and liaise with external tax advisors where required
- Oversee fleet management
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field or AAT Level 3
- Proven experience in a Financial Controller or senior accounting role
- Strong knowledge of accounting standards and financial reporting requirements
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- High proficiency in accounting systems and advanced Excel skills
- Strong leadership and team management abilities
- Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills
- Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines
Preferred Experience
- 5+ years in accounting or finance roles, including supervisory experience
- Experience in financial reporting and internal controls
- Experience in a multi-entity or fast-paced environment (construction experience highly beneficial)
- CIS experience
- Experience using SAGE
