We are looking for a qualified and driven CTA or ATT Tax Accountant to join our clients expanding independent firm in Colchester. This role is perfect for a detail-focused professional with a good base level of experience in tax compliance and advisory services across personal, business and self-assessment taxation. You’ll deliver accurate, timely, and client-centred tax solutions to a diverse range of individuals and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Working as part of a supportive, collaborative team, you’ll help uphold our firm’s reputation for excellence in tax planning, compliance, and client service. The position offers a clear path for professional growth, including support to progress toward the ACCA qualification and increased client management responsibilities. Responsibilities
- Prepare and review self-assessment tax returns for individuals, covering income tax, capital gains tax, and property income.
- Assist in preparing limited company accounts and corporation tax returns in compliance with HMRC requirements.
- Deliver clear, accurate advice on tax-efficient structures, reliefs, and allowances to clients.
- Communicate effectively with clients and external professionals (e.g., solicitors, mortgage brokers, banks) to collect documentation and clarify tax positions.
- Stay current with changes in tax legislation and ensure all client work remains compliant.
- Support senior team members with tax planning and year-end review activities.
- Maintain high-quality work standards, with thorough documentation and audit readiness.
- Contribute to digital transformation by using cloud accounting platforms and tax software.
- Participate in internal quality reviews and help improve team processes.
Requirements
- AAT or ATT qualification with a strong academic record.
- At least 2 years' experience in a tax-focused role within an accounting or advisory firm.
- Demonstrable experience preparing self-assessment returns, including complex income sources and capital gains.
- Solid understanding of HMRC regulations, including PAYE, NIC, VAT, and corporation tax.
- Proficiency in cloud accounting software (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent) and tax tools (e.g., TaxCalc, CaseWare).
- Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy and integrity.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax topics clearly to non-experts.
- Proactive and self-motivated, able to manage multiple deadlines independently within a team setting.
- Willingness to pursue further qualifications (e.g., ACCA), with firm support.
