We are currently seeking patient, reliable, and compassionate individuals based in or around Wokingham who are interested in supporting young people in a role that goes beyond traditional teaching. This opportunity is ideal for individuals who are comfortable working with students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and who understand that some young people need stability, encouragement, and consistent support alongside their learning.

If you are someone who values patience, relationship-building, and making a meaningful difference in a young person’s life, we would love to hear from you.

The Students You’ll Support

  • Most of our referrals involve children with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs or other complex challenges.
  • Many of the young people we support:
  • Have found it difficult to thrive in mainstream school environments
  • May currently be out of education or attending on a reduced timetable
  • Require structured, calm, and consistent support to rebuild confidence

Availability

To ensure continuity for our students, we ask Teaching Assistants to commit to:

  • A minimum of hours per week
  • Core hours between 8:30am and 3:30pm
  • Availability Monday to Friday

Consistency is extremely important in this role, as many of our learners benefit greatly from predictable routines and stable support.

Responsibilities

Alongside supporting students with their learning, tutors are expected to:

  • Maintain accurate attendance records
  • Track and report student progress and engagement
  • Provide clear updates that can be shared with schools and partner professionals
  • Follow safeguarding procedures and documentation standards

These updates help ensure that students receive the right level of support and educational planning.

Experience and Skills

Previous tutoring or teaching experience is not required. We welcome applications from individuals who:

  • Feel comfortable working with SEN or SEMH students
  • Have a patient, calm, and supportive approach
  • Are reliable and able to build positive relationships with young people
  • Can work independently and maintain clear communication
  • Are organised and able to keep simple records and updates

Experience working with young people in schools, youth work, care, mentoring, or support roles can be helpful but is not essential.

Pay

£17 - £20 per hour, depending on experience.

Why This Work Is Important

Success in this role isn’t always measured by grades alone. Sometimes progress means:

  • A student attending and engaging calmly
  • Completing work they once refused to attempt
  • Rebuilding trust with a supportive adult

If you are passionate about supporting young people and making a genuine difference, and can commit to consistent hours in the Wokingham area, we would love to hear from you. This is support work that can truly change a young person’s trajectory.
