We are looking for an ambitious and influential Associate Director to join our growing Sustainability team in London. This is a rare opportunity to join a leading architecture and interior design practice where sustainability is embedded across every discipline, every project and every stage of design. You will play a key role in shaping sustainable outcomes for clients across the UK and internationally, while helping to evolve our sustainability strategy, consultancy services and industry influence. Key Responsibilities

  • Help further develop our sustainability strategy and consultancy services, and actively deliver company targets, set in accordance with external metrics as well as tp bennett’s own Strategic Imperatives and ISO14001:2015 Environmental Management System.
  • Provide colleagues and project teams practical and feasible advice and solutions across tp bennett’s four sustainability focus areas and across all project stages.
  • Communicate sustainability matters at all levels across the practice, and deliver to upskill colleagues.
  • Understand and support Client’s brief in matters of sustainability and translating their aspirations into practicable briefs and delivery models.
  • Prepare high quality reports that clearly and concisely communicate the social and environmental sustainability issues involved, the methodologies to monitor and improve on these, and the evidence/conclusions.
  • Understand & apply the range of current and proposed UK sustainability related legislation to project solutions at all levels of governance (considering also overseas jurisdictions).
  • Work on bids, tenders and RfPs and actively help with winning work for the sustainability team and wider company.
  • Lead the presentation of the sustainability section of these documents to client teams, co-ordinating with the architecture and design team to align design and sustainability outcomes.
  • Work alongside carbon and energy modellers and utilise tools for environmental analysis for options and analysis during design development.
  • Work alongside sub-consultants and in-house experts to deliver Sustainability certifications for projects.
  • Undertaking business development activities that enhance tp bennett's profile in the industry including attending B2B Meetings with Clients and Professionals and attending Industry social events.
  • Leveraging existing client relationships around the UK and position yourself as an expert in the field with external speaking engagements.
  • Individually and collectively undertake innovative research across tp bennett’s four sustainability focus areas. Share learnings internally and externally, giving practical methods and outcomes to colleagues and stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A degree related to architecture/ interior design, engineering or sustainability/ environmental science.
  • Qualified and experienced assessor in WELL and either LEED or BREEAM. Knowledge and experience in delivering projects with BREEAM, LEED, WELL, NABERS and Fitwel.
  • Experience of environmental design tools, technologies and software, and how they can be applied to create sustainable outcomes.
  • Knowledge of UK Environmental Legislation and Building Regulations.
  • Competency in use of One Click LCA, Revit, InDesign, Climate Studio and AutoCAD is desirable.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of other industry standards, e.g. RIBA 2030, NZCBS, UKGBC.
  • Passion, positivity and the ability to innovate & influence within the team, wider business and industry to make the case for environmental and social sustainability.
  • Experience of achieving sustainable design outcomes in the built environment, installing sustainability throughout all RIBA Stages.
  • Confidence to independently lead and drive the sustainability aspects of projects, including budgets and programme, and to interact productively and positively as the main contact for colleagues, clients and design teams.
  • Understanding of operational energy efficiency for buildings regarding a fabric-first approach, including Passivhaus principles.
  • Knowledge of architecture and design supply chains, and the practical application of responsibly sourced materials.
  • An understanding of environmental science (e.g. carbon and water cycles and the prevention of impacts to air, water and land).
  • The ability and desire to remain ahead of sustainability trends and advancements, and to share this growing knowledge throughout tp bennett and across our sector.
