Position Overview
Senior Plumbing & Gas Inspector – The purpose of this position is to provide for the safe occupancy of structures and protect investments in real property by ensuring structures meet plumbing, mechanical, and other related standards.
The role involves researching and applying the BOCA Plumbing and Mechanical Codes, the National Fuel Gas Code, Massachusetts Plumbing and Gas Codes, and other construction codes applicable within the City.
Compliance is achieved through education, permit review, inspections, and enforcement actions.
Responsibilities
- Review applications and associated site, plumbing, mechanical, and other required construction plans.
- Coordinate code‑compliance activities with other inspectors and agencies.
- Answer questions and act on all inquiries regarding plumbing and gas fitting actions for erection, addition, alteration, repair, removal, demolition, and installation of equipment.
- Interpret applicable codes and laws for homeowners, plumbers, builders, contractors, and other City inspectors.
- Enforce the Massachusetts Plumbing & Gas Code and other municipal laws.
- Review all applications for plumbing and gas permits and drawings; calculate and collect applicable fees; issue permits.
- Perform inspections on commercial and residential properties undergoing reconstruction to ensure code compliance and recommend corrective measures.
- Inspect and supervise tests of new and existing plumbing, water piping, fixtures, and equipment, including connections to heating systems and water services.
- Investigate complaints of alleged violations, take appropriate action, and confer with the Inspector of Buildings/Superintendent of Buildings as needed.
- Consult with and coordinate work with other municipal departments to ensure compliance with water/sewer, health, and housing regulations.
- Meet with architects, engineers, plumbers, and building agencies regarding plan reviews.
- Maintain inspection records and prepare reports.
- Stay current on all applicable laws, codes, rules, and regulations regarding plumbing and gas fitting operations.
- Coordinate with City of Waltham Water and Sewer Departments on grease control, cross‑connection control, proper installation and inspection of oil/gas separators, and chemical waste disposal.
- Perform additional or related work as required.
Qualifications
- Advanced technical education and apprenticeship; more than five years of plumbing or plumbing inspection experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Massachusetts Master or Journeyman Plumber Plumbing and Gas Fitting License.
- Pre‑employment physical with drug and alcohol screening and a Criminal Offenders Record Information (CORI).
- Salary & Working Hours
Salary: $87,155 yr (full range up to $102,187 with six steps). Hours: 7:00 a. m. – 3:30 p. m.
