Summary

The Shrewsbury Public Library is seeking a friendly, tech-savvy, and detail-oriented Library Assistant to join our exceptional team! We are hiring a Library Assistant to work 18.5 hours per week, including every Sunday from 12:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. from October 2025 through May 2026. The selected candidate will be scheduled to work at either the Children’s Desk or the Circulation Desk, depending on staffing needs.

In this highly visible, public-facing role, you\’ll help patrons of all ages access our collections, technology, and resources. Whether you\’re guiding a child to their next favorite book, assisting an adult with a printing issue, or shelving materials to keep our library running smoothly, you’ll play an essential part in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone who walks through our doors.

What You\’ll Do

  • Assist patrons in finding books, using computers, and navigating library services.
  • Circulate a variety of materials—books, DVDs, video games, kits, and more. Provide basic technology support for public computers, printers, and scanners.
  • Support fun and educational library programs and events.
  • Keep our collections organized and accessible by shelving and maintaining materials.
  • Perform clerical tasks, direct phone calls, and help with general inquiries. Be a go-to resource for library policies, while protecting patron confidentiality.

Who You Are

  • High school diploma required; two years of experience preferred, especially if you\’ve worked in a library using an Integrated Library System (ILS) like Evergreen. Any equivalent combination of education and experience considered.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills—you enjoy helping others and can do so with empathy and clarity.
  • Comfortable using computers, software applications (like Microsoft Office), and electronic databases.
  • Familiar with (or excited to learn!) the Dewey Decimal System, basic research skills, and common library tech.
  • Reliable, independent, and ready to contribute to a collaborative team.

How to Apply

Whether you\’re an experienced library assistant or someone looking to bring your customer service skills to a vibrant public library, we\’d love to hear from you! Help us build an informed, engaged, and connected community, one patron at a time.
