A privately owned, specialist reinsurer is looking for a Chief Risk Officer to build its risk management function from the ground up.

The opportunity

This is a rare ground-up build. The business currently lacks a sophisticated pricing tool, exposure management framework and capital model, and is now investing in the senior leadership to put this in place. You'll design and build the enterprise risk management framework over the next 24 to 36 months, with genuine autonomy in an entrepreneurial, privately owned environment. This is a hands-on role — you'll build processes personally in the early stages, then recruit and lead a team to support the function as it matures.

What you'll do

  • Design and implement an enterprise risk management framework, including risk appetite, tolerances and governance
  • Select and embed a fit-for-purpose pricing tool
  • Build an exposure management framework and accumulation controls
  • Develop an internal capital model, incorporating vendor catastrophe modelling output
  • Establish reserving, counterparty, credit, market, liquidity and operational risk oversight
  • Recruit, build and lead a risk team as the framework matures
  • Act as a senior risk voice to the CEO, board and shareholders on risk strategy and capital adequacy
  • Represent the business with regulators, rating agencies and other external stakeholders
  • Travel internationally on a regular basis, particularly in the first year or two

What we're looking for

  • Fully qualified actuary (FIA, FSA or equivalent)
  • Experience with vendor catastrophe/exposure modelling tools (e.g. RMS, AIR/Verisk, Moody's) preferred
  • A track record of building risk, pricing, capital or exposure management capability from scratch, rather than only operating within an established framework
  • Comfortable working in a non-standard, privately owned company environment, with less structure than a listed or mutual reinsurer
  • Confident, hands-on and self-directed, with the credibility to operate autonomously
  • Willing and able to travel extensively and internationally
  • Based in or around London, working on a hybrid basis

What's on offer

  • Competitive base salary and bonus
  • Compensation can be adjusted to allow for private healthcare and other provisions
  • A long-term incentive arrangement is in development for the right candidate
  • Genuine autonomy to build a function in your own image
