We are recruiting 11 Sessional Language Tutors within Young Community Languages (YCL).

  • Arabic – 5 openings
  • Bangla – 4 openings
  • Somali – 1 opening
  • Mandarin – 1 opening

Closing date: 25 June 2026

Working hours: Indefinite sessional teaching position, term‑time only (up to 39 weeks per year). Sessions may range from 2 to 6 hours per week, held on weekday afternoons or evenings (Monday to Friday), or at weekends (Saturday and Sunday mornings or afternoons). Hours are based on demand.

Salary: £31.38 to £37.96 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

About Us: Tower Hamlets Council is committed to supporting young people with additional language skills to develop a better understanding of their first language, culture and opening opportunities in education and work. Our service operates across Idea Stores, schools and community settings, providing a unique combination of learning, safe spaces and accessibility in one of the most economically and socially diverse communities in the UK. We work with learners to enable them to develop the skills needed to participate in society, be creative, make progress in education and work and express themselves in other languages.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide high quality teaching, learning, assessment and support for learners in the Young Community Languages service.
  • Work effectively as part of a team with management and tutors.
  • Design and teach high‑quality language courses that ensure learners experience engaging, enjoyable and purposeful classes.
  • Ensure the curriculum is responsive to external drivers such as OFSTED and fit for purpose for the residents of the Borough.
  • Take part in curriculum development to widen the scope of the Young Community Languages service.
  • Contribute to the promotion and development of a culture of children and young people community languages learning in Tower Hamlets.

Qualifications:

  • Detailed knowledge of your chosen language as a native speaker and the ability to teach from beginners to advanced learners.
  • A recognized teaching qualification.
  • Proven experience in teaching your chosen language courses to children and young people.
  • Strong administrative and IT skills and familiarity with course delivery documentation.
  • Commitment to professional development and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent communication skills, specifically the ability to communicate simply, clearly and with empathy with speakers of other languages.
  • Requires an enhanced DBS and the ability to work flexibly and across learning sites and community venues as required.
