Overview

Assistant Psychologist to join the Clinical Health Psychology and Neuropsychology team based at Charing Cross hospital. Working within an inpatient setting embedded in a friendly multidisciplinary team, the post-holder will contribute to the neuropsychology service for the Charing Cross Neurorehabilitation Unit (CNRU). The role offers opportunities to develop clinical skills in psychological and neuropsychological assessment, formulation and interventions, with individuals presenting with emotional, cognitive and behavioural consequences of acquired brain injuries and long term neurological conditions. There are opportunities to be involved in audit, service-related research, teaching and training. The post-holder will be supervised by the lead clinical psychologist to CNRU and will develop competencies to support career progression in Clinical Psychology.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Clinical Psychologist in direct and indirect clinical work, service evaluation and development, as appropriate.
  • Administering and scoring cognitive tests and mood screens.
  • Supporting patients with identifying their rehabilitation goals.
  • Delivering evidence-based group and individual interventions to maximise rehabilitation potential.
  • Contributing to multidisciplinary team discussions about a patient’s cognitive and psychological status, risk and the development and evaluation of rehabilitation plans.
  • Contributing to multidisciplinary reports.
  • Supporting the development of teaching and training, delivery and evaluation of this.
  • Administrative tasks such as identifying, compiling and developing resources and self-help materials for patients, their families and other professionals.
  • Using supervision appropriately and working within the remit of the role and professional competencies.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Essential
    • Bachelor level qualification in Psychology at 2:1 or higher.
    • Eligible for membership of the British Psychological Society.
    • Experience of working as an Assistant Psychologist in a neuropsychology or clinical health psychology setting.
    • Clinical experience in a hospital or healthcare environment.
  • Desirable
    • Further qualification in Neuropsychology.
    • Relevant experience of working with neurological patients.
    • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team.
    • Experience of facilitating group work.
    • Experience and proficiency in administering and scoring psychometric tests.
    • Experience working within a multicultural framework.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to translate basic psychological theory to applied clinical populations.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to develop rapport with patients and families of varying ages and cognitive levels.
  • Ability to communicate sensitive information to patients, carers and colleagues.
  • Quick learner with the ability to carry out technical and basic clinical tasks with minimal supervision after training.
  • Good organisational, time management and task management skills; flexible and able to manage conflicting priorities.
  • Good attention to detail and reliable data recording.
  • High computer literacy; proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Graduate-level research skills for literature searches and data summaries.
  • Excellent written communication skills.

  • Ability to accept and use supervision appropriately and effectively.
  • Ability to manage own stress and recognise when additional personal support is necessary.
