Clinical Psychologist/Neuropsychologist in Cardiff

Totus Neurorehabilitation is a growing community neurorehabilitation service providing brain injury rehabilitation and cognitive assessments throughout the South West of England, South Wales, and East Anglia. The service operates three teams – Bristol, Exeter (expanding along the south coast) and East Anglia – and is looking for an enthusiastic and committed Clinical Psychologist/Neuropsychologist to cover East Anglia. Funding is case‑by‑case through individual funding packages (e.g. CHC funding). The post holder is contracted to individual clients, with working hours based on client requirements and best suited to a practitioner working part‑time in the NHS seeking one or two additional cases a week. Because the role covers a large geographical area, a full UK driving licence, access to a car for business purposes, and the ability to travel long distances for appointments are required. Travel time is paid at half the clinical rate. The post is primarily from home with a confidential space for online sessions and meetings when needed. This is an Associate position; the applicant will be self‑employed, contracted to the client, and required to register as a sole trader with HMRC, submit an annual tax return, obtain indemnity insurance, a DBS certificate, and registration with the ICO.

Main duties of the job

• Join an interdisciplinary rehabilitation team (Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, etc.) to provide evidence‑based brain injury rehabilitation in the community, clients’ homes, and outpatient clinics.
• Conduct neuropsychological assessments using appropriate psychometric tools.
• Manage your own caseload, working across services and systems throughout clients’ rehabilitation journeys.
• Collaborate creatively with staff and develop evidence‑based approaches, demonstrating a keen interest in neuropsychology and a desire to excel in the field.
• Receive supervision from Neuropsychologists on the Specialist Register of Neuropsychologists.
• Lead multidisciplinary team work on complex case formulation, drawing on experience with neurological presentations and cognitive deficits.
• Provide in‑house MDT training and development, participate in MDT meetings, and support knowledge‑sharing within and outside Totus.
• Maintain GDPR‑compliant confidential clinical records and contribute to service development, quality improvement, and protocol development.

Job responsibilities

• Independently manage a caseload of complex neurorehabilitation clients.
• Deliver neuropsychological rehabilitation within the community.
• Interpret clinical data for diagnosis, prognosis, and report writing.
• Provide detailed written reports and feedback to clients, families, and referrers.
• Liaise with case managers, legal teams, insurers, and external agencies.
• Participate in MDT meetings and collaborative care planning.
• Carry out risk assessments and ensure safety measures.
• Educate clients, family members and care teams about needs and strategies.
• Use outcome measures to evaluate and guide interventions.
• Maintain professional competency through CPD, supervision, and reflective practice.

Qualifications

• Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (“Clinical Psychologist”) or equivalent, accredited by the BPS and recognised by the HCPC.
• HCPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist.
• Evidence of ongoing CPD in line with HCPC/BPS requirements.
• Pre‑ or postgraduate qualification or training in Clinical Neuropsychology (e.g. PGDip, MSc).
• BPS registration as a Chartered Psychologist.
• Completion of relevant CPD in neuropsychological assessment or rehabilitation.

Experience

• Experience with adults with neurological conditions during clinical psychology training or equivalent.
• Experience delivering psychological interventions relevant to medical or neuro conditions.
• Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT).
• Experience in the private healthcare sector.
• Experience in community settings and/or home visits.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Understanding of psychological models, theories and interventions applicable to neurorehabilitation.
• Ability to conduct structured cognitive assessments and produce clinical formulations under supervision.
• High level of competence in verbal and written communication.
• Awareness of safeguarding, consent, and capacity legislation.
• Ability to manage a clinical caseload under supervision, prioritising work to meet deadlines.
• Competent in using IT systems including Word, Excel, Outlook, and internet‑based tools.
• Familiarity with litigation processes in personal injury or clinical negligence contexts.
• Understanding of NHS and/or private rehabilitation service delivery models.
• Familiarity with digital health platforms and cloud‑based record systems (e.g. Qunote).
• Skills in delivering psycho‑education to families, staff or support networks.

Working Conditions

Primarily from home, with visits to patients’ homes for assessment and intervention. Clinic rooms may also be utilised when appropriate. Travel up to 1.5 hours at a time and often up to 4 hours in a day. Frequent use of a VDU/computer with varying demands. Intensive concentration required during individual assessment and family interviews, sometimes with challenging or aggressive individuals.

Job Summary

The post holder will work from home, providing neuropsychological assessment and neurorehabilitation services to clients with acquired and traumatic brain injury and neurological conditions. They will collaborate across systems, including NHS and statutory services, case managers, legal services, allied health professionals, and family members, and will be supervised by a senior clinical neuropsychologist.
