Speech and Langauge Therapist in Bristol

Totus Neurorehabilitation is a growing community neurorehabilitation service providing brain injury rehabilitation and cognitive assessments throughout the South West of England and South Wales, and East Anglia. There are currently three teams; Bristol, Exeter (expanding along the south coast) and East Anglia. We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Speech and Language Therapist to join our team to cover the East Bristol and Bath area. Our services are funded on a case‑by‑case basis through individual funding packages (e.g., exceptional healthcare funding, CHC funding). The post holder will be contracted to individual clients and the working hours will be based on the client requirements. This role is ideal for a practitioner working part time in the NHS looking for one or two additional cases a week. Because the post covers a large geographical area, the successful candidate must hold a full UK driving licence, have access to a car for business purposes, and be able to travel long distances for appointments. Travel time will be paid at half the clinical rate. The role also involves working partly from home and requires a confidential space for online sessions and meetings. This is an associate position: the applicant will be self‑employed and contracted to the client. They will need to register as a sole trader with HMRC, submit their own tax return yearly, and maintain their own indemnity insurance, DBS certificate, and registration with the ICO.

Job Responsibilities

• Part of an interdisciplinary rehabilitation team (including physiotherapists, psychologists and occupational therapists) providing evidence‑based brain injury rehabilitation in the community, clients' homes, or outpatient clinics.
• Manage own caseload within the team and work across services and systems throughout clients' rehabilitation journeys.
• Deliver complex speech, language, communication and swallowing assessments and interventions using formal and informal tools.
• Develop and deliver personalised, evidence‑based treatment plans and evaluate outcomes using recognised measures, adjusting therapy accordingly.
• Provide therapy in a range of settings including clients' own homes, residential settings and remotely.
• Support clients and families with communication strategies and dysphagia management.
• Complete risk assessments and ensure appropriate safety measures are in place.
• Provide education to clients, family members and care teams on the client's needs and strategies.
• Write comprehensive reports summarising needs and treatment progress.
• Contribute to regular MDT case reviews, collaborative goal setting and joint goal plans.

Qualifications

• Recognised degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
• Registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Speech and Language Therapist and membership of RCSLT.
• Completion of advanced post‑registration training (e.g., dysphagia, AAC).
• Participation in relevant special interest groups.
• Commitment to continuing professional development and seeking supervision from senior colleagues.

Experience

• Post‑qualification experience working with adults with acquired neurological conditions (including stroke, TBI, Parkinson's disease).
• Experience managing a caseload independently.
• Experience with swallowing assessments and management.
• Established multidisciplinary team working and contribution to case formulation.
• Experience in community neurorehabilitation settings.
• Delivery of training to other professionals or carers.

Knowledge and Skills

• Detailed knowledge of communication and swallowing disorders in neurological populations.
• Ability to plan and deliver specialist SLT interventions independently.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Effective time management and caseload prioritisation.
• Awareness of safeguarding, consent and capacity legislation.
• Understanding of cognitive‑communication disorders.
• Experience using outcome measures and goal‑setting frameworks (e.g., GAS, TOMs).
• Familiarity with clinical record systems (e.g., Qunote).
• IT skills in digital communication tools.
