Overall Purpose
The High School Health teacher is responsible for delivering a comprehensive, inclusive and developmentally appropriate PSHE/Health curriculum that promotes students’ physical, emotional, mental and social wellbeing in health classes. In addition to teaching classes, this individual will be responsible for collaborating in working groups, developing parent education programs, and staying current with statutory UK guidance for PSHE/statutory guidance. ASL’s K-12 PSHE/Health curriculum is aligned with the UK Relationships and Sex Education and Health (RSE) statutory guidelines. This position requires the provision of rigorous content through a creative, inclusive and flexible pedagogical approach.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach 10 semester-long sections of health for Grade 9 and/or 10 students
- Plan and deliver an engaging PSHE/Health lesson aligned with UK PSHE/RSE statutory guidance to cover strands including Mental health and wellbeing, identity and self-awareness, Relationship and consent, Substance awareness, human growth and development, UK Protected characteristics
- Create a safe, respectful classroom environment for sensitive discussion
- Differentiating instruction to meet diverse learning needs
- Lead parent discussion groups - focusing on parent education and opening up lines of communication to facilitate the home-school partnership
- Regularly review and update the curriculum according to the latest health education research, RSE statutory guidelines, and community need
- Organize and participate in field trips to facilitate active learning
- Monitor and evaluate students’ progress toward standards through ongoing assessment with growth-oriented feedback
- Prepare for parent conferences, complete report cards, etc.
- Participate in well-being initiatives, Parent workshops, and ongoing PSHE professional development
- Identify, propose, and host appropriate guest speakers
- Any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the High School Principal
Selection criteria
Essential qualifications/experience
- Bachelors-level training in Health or related field
- Experience teaching PSHE, Health, RSE, and/or wellbeing programs
- Substantial teaching experience in a diverse school setting
- Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent technology skills, including the ability to integrate technology to support instruction (including AI)
- The ability to work collaboratively in a team-focused environment
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom, department, and workplace
- A proven commitment to the safeguarding and welfare of children
Desirable qualifications/experience
- Masters-level training in Health, education, or a related field
- Experience with standards-based assessment and feedback
- Experience facilitating student engagement in active citizenship projects
- Substantial teaching experience in a diverse school setting
- Experience in a school with a similar teaching philosophy to that of ASL, and/or familiarity with American pedagogical approaches to learning
